There's no way that my SloRunner (aka: A big ass - lifted brick) is really getting anywhere near this.

    upload_2024-3-11_13-41-15.jpg

I was driving down a rural road, with the cruise set at 50MPH. Well, after cruising down this road for 10 miles (it was flat and straight), I saw this read out on my dashboard.

My first thought was "Well, I know I'm not drunk because I don't drink, so I'm not seeing things that aren't real." My next thought was "I hate it when my truck cock teases me telling me that I'm getting impressive MPG's and I know it's a damned lie!"

I honestly didn't think that my MPG readout was capable of going higher than 23MPG. I have never seen it get this high before. But for a truck that's lifted with off road tires, it's very impressive.

Apparently it thinks you were averaging 36 MPH, which would explain the mileage.

The computer's estimate has been pretty accurate compared to my calculations at the pump.

That said, I'd say at 50 mph with no stops, no hills that's definitely possible.

With cruise set at 68-72 I could just barely kiss 23 MPG computer estimated driving Austin > Dallas. (stock, Defender LTX tires) Once I got in town with traffic lights that started dropping fast to a final calculation of 21.8 MPG at the pump the next day.

My Sorento averaged 21-22 MPG while I owned it, around 19-21 city, 22-25 highway but cruising for a while at 45-55 MPH leaving Outer Banks (with some 70 MPH cruising at the end when we hit I-95) gave me an all-time-best average of 30.0 MPG at the pump.

Also note that the average MPH is skewed since time at lower speeds like 0 MPH really brings down the average.

We can hit good numbers easily especially downhill After Start - It's maintaining that MPG through an entire tank that's the tough part.

    I believe it.
This is my last fill-up March 9.. Mostly highway w/cruise set at 66mph. Avg speed was 42 mph. There's probably 30 miles of stop and go trickled in there. The highest average seen on the 'since start' was 24.5, but just for a minute or so.

From one of my trips up to the mountains, a short run from Colfax (I was visiting the Dissent Offroad folks) over Donner Summit into Truckee. Burn rate is bad no matter which direction you travel over the summit but its made up on the loooong downhill sections.

That seems reasonable. You were only driving 50 mph on the flat. I'm supercharged, lifted and on bigger/heavier tires than OEM and would have got about 22 mpg @50 on the flat.

    Nah… it’s doable at 50mph and favorable wind conditions…

I drive like a grandma and get 21-23 easily here in the Rockies + thin atmosphere

You went 10 mi at a relatively slow speed, presumably under very light engine load. Not surprising at all. Be surprised when it's over a full tank.

At that average speed my gas F250 with the 7.3 V8 gets close to mid 20s as long as it's flat ground.

OP did you coast (foot of the gas) for some period of time during that drive?

When taking foot of the gas, fuel flow to the engine is cut, so as far as the computer is concerned your MPG is unlimited! Throwing some coasting into your diving mix will raise the average MPG.

Image below is from when I was coasting/engine braking downhill for a mile or two.

I'd love to see anywhere near close to that. HA. On the usual 45min drive to the range, I get between 16.8 and 18.7 mpg @ 72-75.

Of course it is possible. I regularly get that kind of mileage driving dirt roads. On the trip in the below pic only about 50 miles was on pavement, the rest on dirt which is why the 37 mph average.
    trip data closeup 11-18-23.jpg

When I filled up after the above trip the 4Runner had 377 miles on it and it took 15.3 gallons to fill it back up, which works out to 24.64 mpg. Pretty darn close to what the display showed!

There's no "denying" that modding the 4Runner by lifting it, installing big gnarly tires, a roof rack to catch the wind, and a thousand pounds of overlanding gear drops fuel mileage a few mpg!
