Hi all. I was just gifted a 2000 4 runner 4x4. I’m both excited and terrified. I’m not sure if it’s going to be a money pit or not ‍♀️
It a beautiful truck, low mileage, original owner and been garaged it’s entire life. That’s the upside, the downside is because the owner became disabled it hasn’t been started in at least 3 and possibly up to 4 years.
Thoughts? Am I going to ruin it if I even try to start it?

Before trying to start it, I would do an oil change, check the spark plugs, and pour some Sta-bil in the gas tank.

You should be fine. My biggest concern would be the stale gas in the tank.

Post up some pics. Would love to see it.

I’d try to get as much of the stale fuel out of the tank as possible, then pour 5 gallons of fresh premium into the tank, along with some SeaFoam to remove moisture and clean the injectors. New battery or borrow one from another vehicle. Fresh oil and filter. Could check air filter for critter nests and overall condition of filter. Welcome to the forum from San Diego!

Welcome. Change the spark plugs, air filter, drain the old fuel, fill with fresh fuel, make sure that the battery is new or fully charged, would be a good time to change out all of the other fluids. After starting it up the first time, change the fuel filter.

Welcome from Wisconsin! Get as much of the old gas out of the tank, like DesertSurfer said, put in some fresh gas, a bottle of injector cleaner and some Marvel Mystery Oil, it will add a little lubrication where none has been for the down time. It is an 'old school' thing, but it never hurt any of the barn finds we ran.
