I have the 2021 4Runner Off-road Premium (not Professional) coming and I was wondering about my carbon wheels on my mountain bike and the exhaust exiting out the back of the 4runner. I have read that it can cause heat damage. Anyone had issues with this? I was thinking of adding the option for the TRD Pro exhaust so it would exit to the side behind the passenger wheel, or would any muffler shop be able to alter what is there to exit to the side?

    Am I over thinking this?

First there is no 4Runner Off-road Professional, that’s not a thing.

But for the question it’s a non issue of your using a hitch mounted tray -
One up, Thule XTR, Kuat, Rocky Mounts, whatever, they will all sit high enough up and away that it will be fine. When you have one of those strap to back racks where the bikes hang it can cause some damage if it sticks the wheel right in front of the exhaust opening, but if you have carbon wheels on your mountain bike your not running a cheap janky rack anyway, so you’re good.

I own a 2015 TRD Professional but I find nothing professional about it.

I worked at a bike shop for many years. We rarely saw wheel/rim damage from exhaust heat but your tires will definitely sustain damage/melt! Just make sure the bike isn't hanging directly in front of the exhaust and you'll be fine. Enjoy.

My bikes sit higher than the sill of the bumper, and extend out at least a foot aft of the bumper itself. I've never noticed any issues with the wheels due to exhaust (though I don't ride carbon wheels). For reference I use a Yakima Dr. Tray hitch rack.

just how far aft does the heat radiate from the pipe? never considered that before, but my rack ( a pretty simple Nashbar deal) keeps the bikes way behind the vehicle

Single bike I would just grow it in the back. I put an XL 29er in the back of mine a couple times a week, fits perfect.

I’m not a bike rider but, I did do the tail pipe mod. It’s just a 2 1/2”, 90* bend from a parts store.
But I made sure that it was a smooth bend and wasn’t one of the wrinkled things that they sell too.
    And a stainless band clamp.
I did this so my thin skinned shins wouldn’t get burned while loading or unloading stuff from the back.

I take two mountain bikes on my tire carrier rack, no issues.

    Tinted windows. USR tail lights.
I have one of those fork mounts that I put in the cargo area. I remove the front tire and attach the come to the mount inside. That way it is secure.
