Maps for Central America

Ill be taking my 2020 TRD Pro from the US to Panama. Does anyone know how to add the additional maps for the nav to work in Central America?

 

I sure hope you mean by boat. I was down in Honduras before the pandemic and it was very sketchy. I understand Daniel Ortega and the Sandinistas have taken over Nicaragua again and all the ex-pats fled.

 

Looks like Ill be shipping down then driving back up at some point later this year. Im not worried about the Pandemic and Nica doesn't bother me, I have a few ex-pat friends there now.
More importantly, looking to find a way to make sure the stock nav will work... Toyota support was completely useless.

 

You would be better off to get a subscription to a phone/tablet mapping app like Gaia, get familiar with it, and download various map layers to it. For offline use.

 

Thanks but my tablet maps serve a different purpose. I need the stock Nav to work.

 

LOL The stock nav doesnt even work in the U.S. I cant trust it here id certainly not trust it down there.

 

Forget the in-car nav. It sucks even in the US.

A lot of people don't know that you can download Google Maps for offline use on your phone. I do this before every international trip so I have a full map of the city/area/country I'll be in.

You should also consider signing up for an international cell coverage plan for a month or however long you'll be traveling. Then using Google maps or whatever to navigate.

But I can say from experience, you get way more stories to tell when you try to navigate a country without a map.

 

Just get a map and compass should you need it

Yes, I know about offline maps; Yes, I know about other apps. Although I appreciate the use of an alternate device and I use them while going off road and/or getting lost, I use the stock nav for when Im staying local. My 4R will being Panama for at least a few months before I leave so Id like the stock nav to work. My stops in each country will be at least a week or so and Id rather not leave a nice Garmin or iPad in my dash.

 

No offence but seems like you're just choosing to make things harder than they need to be. Get a phone holder. Take your phone with you every time you get out of the vehicle. Done deal. Or as trekker stated, go old school and just buy some print maps.

Having another device, keeping it powered, putting it away each time I park, having a potentially obstructed view and/or obstructed dash access, and managing another devices technology makes it significantly harder than finding an SD card or USB connection which can upload the maps like many other cars do.

Im looking for a way to update the maps of the stock nav... not add another device. Please keep your replies ONLY to updating the stock nav.

 

Have you tried Android Auto/Apple Carplay? It won't obstruct your view. It uses the screen that's built in to the head unit. You have a 2020. It's capable of this.

Also, I'd look into some of those South African side of the car flamethrowers if you're going to be driving up through all those places.

 

Apple CarPlay is a good point. I intend on using that as well.
I havnt seen the flame throwers but sounds cool... do they sell it on Amazon?

 

Seriously, Android Auto navigation integration into the head unit is so good for me that I wish I didn't spend the money on the Toyota navigation features. I never use it. I always use Android Auto. Yes, it does add a little bit of extra work to connect your phone, but it fits your criteria to a T in other ways as well as letting you have access to offline maps if you prep your phone for it. Don't discount it because it's not the regular Toyota maps.

As for the flamethrowers, look on Amazon South Africa

Actually you are choosing to make it harder. Do you have a smartphone? Do you have a USB plug that fits the phone? Plug it into your 4Runner, open CarPlay or Android Auto and use one of the COUNTLESS map/GPS apps on either the App Store or Play Store. Done. Seems much more simple than trying to figure out a way of updating your stock navigation via USB. The USB plug keeps the phone charged plus displays the map on the same screen your stock Nav uses. No obstructed view or dash access, no extra equipment that you have to leave behind(unless you leave your phone in the car). But if you'd still rather find a way to update your stock Nav via USB stick.... Good luck.

 

If you can't offer the specific solution that Ive asked for and I adamantly said I don't want alternative solutions, then keep it to yourself.

If I'm wrong, please explain how using the stock Navigation is easier then.

 

Im not interested in convincing you of the way I see it. Its how I feel is easier and that's enough for me.
