    Hey all,

    Sharing this service estimate so folks can get an idea of a 90k service record straight from the dealer. I would appreciate better understanding whether these rates are competitive, and if not how much I'd expect to pay going outside the dealer.

    This is for a 90k major service for a 5th Gen 2016 4Runner TRD Pro.

    Rates from a dealership are NEVER competitive. You can probably get all that work done (and maybe more?) for half the price. Dealerships always inflate their prices by 40% or more.

    $2721.18. You'd be a fool to pay those prices. Find an independent shop or learn to DIY. Those are bend over with no grease prices. You should be able to get that service done for 1/2-2/3 of that price.

    those prices are dealer crazy for sure.

    How many of those items actually need to be done? I'm wondering about upselling vs. what is required. Fluid level, brakes, coolant and serp belt are the only things from your list actually on the 90K Toyota maintenance schedule and they are all inspect, adjust and replace if necessary at that mileage.

    Have any of the fluids mentioned been changed prior and if so at what mileage? What is their current condition?

    It's sill a bit early for spark plugs unless you have reason to believe there is an issue.

    Any data to support the need for decarb and fuel system cleaning?

    Forget the AC fresh and fuel service or whatever it's called.
    A good shop outside will do it for about $1500.
    You might find shops that's would do it cheaper but their work could be questionable.

    They call them Stealerships for a reason. In all seriousness, a good independent mechanic can do all of that at half of the cost. You can do it all yourself for just the cost of parts and your time.

    good post, you’re not a fool, you’re asking questions in the right place.

    Very recently I got service done for 100,000kms (not miles).
    Diffs and transfer case fluids have come before this but I did get auto trans and brake fluid done for first time. I’ve read spark plugs are fine still even at 90k miles. Brakes and rotors have been known to go longer than 90, but not always. My Serp belt inspected and OK.
    Don’t let them take your quality factory Toyota parts and replace, or replace with aftermarket especially, if it isn’t needed (and a lie).

    Wide open throttle isn't going to clean the throttlebody. It could help clean the valves because of the amount fuel being sprayed over them. Which leads to the second issue, the carbon build up issue you're referencing has to do with the fuel injection type. Direct injection engines don't spray fuel over the valves so they get coated in carbon. This has nothing to do with forced induction vs naturally aspirated. And even then, most modern direct injection engines have both port and direct injection to combat the issue. So really, what the hell are you actually talking about

    Prices are what they are. If you go to a dealership, in my experience, you usually get recommended more things than needed. An independent mechanic may charge the same in your area, but if he is honest, he'd tell you what is needed and what can wait.
    One of the reasons I started learning to work on my vehicles is dealership service dept. pissed me off. I do not mind paying more if the value is there. However, it always seemed like I was being cheated. I hate that more than anything else.

    Welcome to the forum. I hope to see you around.
    I am not asking you to start DIying now. However, I urge you to consider

    1. Are you OK potentially knowing you got cheated, paying for all of that when not all of these items were needed and
    2. even with you buying necessary tools, you can do all of this at a fraction of the cost. You will in all likelihood spend more time the first time doing it all yourself, even if you consider taking your vehicle to dealership, waiting in their lobby etc.

    For me it was worth it. I know exactly what has been done on my vehicle and whom to blame if its messed up (me!). For some items, I simply don't think the value is there -- say outside of engine oil/filter changes. I have replaced spark plugs on my V6 Honda Pilot and scratched my forearm trying to get the back 6. But for me working on cars is cathartic. Knowing I spent way less, and more important DID NOT GET TAKEN FOR A RIDE, is well worth my blood, sweat and time.

    Insane with these prices. I think if you are able to find a local shop that will do more for you long term, I would try that instead. It is always good to stick with one person or shop so there is history and not different people touching things and creating different opinions.

    Your dealer is fleecing you! The last time my 4Runners were at the dealership, is when I bought them. If you can learn how to do the basic maintenance on your rig, you'll save a shit-ton of money!

    Brake fluid is done on time, not mileage. Typically every 3 years. Depends when it was last done. Price is high.

    AT fluid: Per the manual its lifetime so this is an upsell, but I personally would do it every 60-100k. Whatever you do DONT let them flush it. Should only drain and fill which just takes a few quarts. Price is nuts.

    spark plugs: price is nuts, they are about $10/ea plus labor. There are no wires to inspect, its coil on plug.

    cooling system: this is due but it’s also a simple drain and fill. Literally a 30min job with no tools. Price is nuts.

    Brake pads/rotors. Only needs to be done if the pads are actually worn down.

    Serpentine belt- price is nuts, belt can’t be more than $30-50 and it’s a pretty easy job.

    Fuel system cleaner is a complete con job. These are not direct injection, they don’t carbon up. And the throttle body doesn’t carbon up on ANY vehicle, not even DI.

    AC refresh- another con job.

    My dealer charges 299$ an axle for brakes. Rotors are extra if needed. Spark plug replacement is at 120k miles per manual I believe.

    An ass-load would be what ever a donkey could carry, give or take a few pounds.
    Experience tells me that a donkey cannot carry 2000 pounds unless you use a whip.

    I would urge you to not pay that. I have done all the recommended service on my 4R since purchasing it in 2020. I have done oil changes and new filter every 5000 miles. Replaced oil in both diffs, and all other recommended services for just the price of components. You can certainly do it all yourself and learn how to on YouTube. Or you can get quotes from small mechanic shops in your area that are trustworthy and knowledgeable.

    Honestly, if I trust the master tech at the Dealer and know he would do it right, I am more than happy to pay a premium for his services and actually I do.
    No, and I repeat no independent shop can match the workmanship of a certified master tech who has been trained to work on the 4runner.
    Now, the question is , if you can find a master tech like that. All of this is moot if you work on your own car.

    Some of those items are due if you check your maintenance guide. Brakes only when needed. Brake fluid can be tested for moisture content. Plugs not due. Coolant is super easy to change without even removing the skid plate. About $20 for a special funnel and $25 for a gallon of super long life from my local dealer.
    Viking's Garage has a simple tutorial on coolant change. This is about the only maintenance I can do on my own nowadays. My body doesn't work anymore like all you young bucks in this forum. ;)
