I am no expert, in fact quite the opposite when it comes to electrical stuff. But I want to learn and take pride in doing stuff myself (when I can).

I have a 2015 4Runner that I have/am adding some low AMP lights, I currently have the said lights wired to a switch panel for power but I would like to have the lights operate when I use my driving lights rather than have to switch them on…or in my case, forget to switch them off when exiting my truck.

I have been all over the internet looking for a simple solution to this but everything I find seems to be directed toward powering lights when the ignition is turned on or through a switch. I can’t seem to find something to help me get power when the driving light is turned on.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Pictures are helpful as well, I am a visual guy…also not an electrician so simple is awesome.

Tap into the power wire that is turning turning on the lights. Use that as the control side of a relay, have the output side power whatever you want to turn on with the first set of lights.

To elaborate just a but on what @Agent_Outside said, the easiest place to tap off the headlight is the positive lead wire that the bulb plugs in to. You can use a t-tap to connect a wire to the control terminal of a relay. Just buy an SPST relay from your local parts store, and look up a wiring guide online for it. You can then run a power supply wire with an inline fuse from the battery to the continuous power terminal on the relay. Basically, what the relay does is allow you to power the accessory light s directly from the battery, but trigger them from another existing switched power source.

Make sure you tap off the lights you want to trigger from - low beam, high beam, fog light, etc. Now, If you want the lights to turn on automatically with one of those other front facing lights, but ALSO have the ability to shut the lights off at times, just run that t tapped trigger wire through your aftermarket SPST switch.

Use heat shrink tube to get a moisture resistant seal on any of your connections. Use split wire loom and zip ties, routing along near factory wiring to get a nice professional look. And POST PICS OR IT DIDN'T HAPPEN! Good luck!

in this case, the diagram shows "12 volts" through a switch to terminal 86. That would be the 12v from your headlights. A test light or multimeter will help you id what is your 12v wire and what is ground. Also wanted to mention, sometimes auto parts box stores or tractor supply will sell a kit to wire in accessory lights, that comes with the relay and harness all ready to go.
