    Hey yall, my name is Forrest and Im hoping to buy a 4runner that is for sale but needs the engine rebuilt. If I do get it, ill be looking for all the advice I can get on rebuilding an engine as I would love to put as much of myself into this thing as possible.

    Welcome...a JDM engine for the 4Runner should be easy to locate. I'd take that approach rather than doing it yourself. The less time in the shop the more time enjoying that 4R.

    If it’s the 3.0L V6, then I would see if the next year 3.4L V6 would bolt up, maybe a low mileage one from a salvage yard. The 3.0L V6 was a problem child for Toyota, on the other hand, the 3.4L V6 was a jewel. Welcome to the forum!
