I have been wanting a toy for a backup so I sold my trusty Escape and started hunting. I was pretty well sold on 89-91 Cherokees with the I6, but I guess Cherokee sellers are looking for attention as opposed to actually selling their rigs.

This 4Runner popped up for sale today for the right price (for me) with 191k miles, everything works. It has an exhaust leak, leaks oil from the valve covers and pulls to the left on the highway. Cosmetically it looks like most other older 4Runners I have seen for sale over the years like it was owned by a mechanic, dirty and grimy.

Plan to first change the valve cover gaskets and verify that is the only leak, then take it to get the exhaust leak fixed. Then move onto cosmetics like ripping out the carpets, rhino lining the pans and deep cleaning panels and seats along with dash repairs.

I look forward to pick the experts brains!

    Welcome from Western North Carolina.
I have a '98 and just recently had my valve cover gaskets replaced. It is almost a given on the 3rd gens.
Good luck getting yours up to snuff!
Just for your info, the gasket replacement cost me about $400.00, but worth it. Make sure the timing belt has been replaced as well.
