..........Open all the way. It was 27 degees this morning. It stopped about 3/4 of the way up. 2023 Limited, 18K miles.

    Is this normal?
*edit. It's a manual lift gate.

Is it powered lift? I’ve camped in colder temps and had no issue with my 22 lift gate, but it’s human powered, not sure what’s on the limited 23s.

    Oooh look, another mod.....
First off, all 4Runner's have manual lift gates. There is no power option from the factory. Second, it sounds like a strut may have gone out, or both, or....they are going out.

My 2021 4R has done that, stops about 3/4 up, every winter since it’s first when it’s cold, less than 25° or so. Only hit my head twice before learning to check it when it’s cold out.

I would see if it persists next spring as it warms up.

Another reason for not buying the 6th gen, power lift gate.

The gas pressure will drop when it is cold. When it is nice and warm, marginal pressure in the strut would probably be okay.

I'm kind of shocked no one posted about "shrinkage" or "not getting it up". You people have disappointed me.

6th gen premium trims will have a kick sensor under the rear bumper. You can then hang truck nuts under there. Kick your 4Runner in the nuts to open the tailgate.

Any extra weight added? Just upgrading the speakers caused the same issue, but most likely just the cold in your case.

Minivans had it for 15 years. Mainstream SUVs (like RAV4) had it for 10 years.

I just saw the post. Maybe OP could try rubbing it with warm hands and occasionally blowing some warm air on it. That might help getting it up quickly. As for the shocks, I’m not sure.

Shock issue. The liftgate on my 2020 opens and holds in negative degree weather.

FWIW, it was 12° this morning here, and my liftgate opened fully and held. 2019 with ~127K miles on it.

Being a "man" doesn't necessarily mean as much as it used to.

That's what I'm thinking. I have a 94 Silverado with a cap. Last winter the original shocks fot the tailgate glass finally weakened.

One could also stick out their tongue and touch the tip to the cartridge and warm it up if it was REALLY cold!!

I was just researching replacing my hatch struts w OEM, 2018 ORP.

Since new the lift gate has always been sluggish the last quarter way up in very cold weather.

Interesting re the additional speaker weight, if you look at the current OEM options there is one set for "with premium audio" and one set for "without". The "with" set I''m guessing is the same but just can handle a little extra weight. I'll have to check and see what the originals are.
