Is it a good idea to microwave an airbag?

Forgive the low resolution. It's from 2009.

 

Idiots, they're lucky they didn't get blinded by shattering glass, neither had their safety glasses on by the time the airbag went off!!

 

Yeah, but the tinfoil shield protected their nuts, and that's all that matters.

 

Interesting, that clip is from 2009. I wonder what they have graduated to by now?

 

Nothing from what I've heard. Youtube's changes over the years screwed the channel over, and they lost a lot of viewers.

 

If you wrap the airbag in a tinfoil shield before you microwave it I hear it prevents it from exploding...

 

This is a long one, but worth it. I used to work in the film industry. One day we were called upon to simulate an airbag going off in an actor’s face. The plan was to detonate an actual airbag, and then plumb it to a nitrogen bottle and a solenoid valve, the idea being that we could control the inflation rate of the airbag and avoid injury to the actor. We set up out on the pavement next to the sound stage, and it occurred to us that it would be fun to see how high a nerf football could be launched with an airbag. Then the prop master strolled by, and, curious, he asked us what we were doing. After informing him of our plans, he offered to replace the football with an anatomically correct baby doll. We thought that was a splendid idea, and so he toddled off to get the doll, stopping at the wardrobe trailer to get the doll appropriately attired. As we waited, a member of the camera department walked by and asked us what was going on. Before long three members of the camera department arrived with a camera and tripod. And what was originally going to be a simple setting-off of an airbag turned into a full blown, unauthorized, hastily improvised second unit shot. The screening of dailies the next morning was particularly well attended, which aroused the curiosity of the director, producer, and other mucky-mucks. When our improvised shot was screened - a baby launched 40 feet into the sky by a detonated airbag - the reaction was, shall we say, mixed. All the participants were waiting for a scolding that fortunately never came, and the producer remarked “What’s that they say about an idle mind?”
