Folks, picking up my new 2024 TRD ORP later this week. Reading the PDF owners manual, it doesnt appear that wired Apple Car Play is supported through the USB port(s).

    Is that correct?

There’s one that supports it but the other ports are for charging only.

Just to add another confirmation: I have a 2024 SR5 that works with carplay via USB port.

Carplay does not work via bluetooth (at least on my trim).

OK I assume the front one. Is this a USB type A (original USB)?

OK good to know. The manual on Page 384

"The USB charging ports are used to supply 3.0 A of electricity at 5 V
to external devices (power consumption of 15 W).
The USB charging ports are for charging only. They are not designed
for data transfer or other purposes"

Made me nervous. Do people have good luck with wireless Carplay products?

One more thing you should consider. If you always need to charge your phone when you get in the truck, the wireless connect is really a waste of money. If the cable has to be there to charge, you might as well use the port that connects.

You can still have a charging cable that originates from the center console. Out of sight when you don’t need it. For short in town trips, or frequent stops, the wireless adapter is invaluable.

Even if I need to charge my phone I won’t use wired CarPlay because the port is very slow charging. I use another port that has fast charge

Since OP has been answere, I'm going to go a bit OT here:

I don't understand why OEM would restrict carplay to only tethered? Obviously, the technology to use it over bluetooth is there, so why would they not allow it? After all, the phone still works via bluetooth without any hoops in the way.

It seems strange that I can do everything I needs (lock/unlock/start) without ever touching a key, but I have to plug a phone in if I want to use carplay?

Is this some kind of odd licensing thing at play?

Not to be that guy, but pg 55 of the audio and nav manual gives instructions on apple car play use.

Because Toyota is a low value brand.

Because the 4Runner is a dinosaur and since they are phasing out the 5th gen without any issue selling what they produced, they didn’t care about putting the new tech in it (that’s also why the cameras quality looks like shit). Other Toyotas like the rav4 support wireless CarPlay straight from factory.

the 6th gen will have better tech inside, unfortunately there are a lot of downside to the 6th gen that I’d rather keep the 5th gen with old tech
