Interior Light cutoff switch

Does anyone know of a way to turn off the interior lights while driving? I have a '22 TRD and it is really annoying to drive in the mountains at night. There are so many interior lights shining in my face all night from the stereo, instrument panel, and all of the other accessory knows and switches.

If there is an easy mod to add a cutoff switch to turn off the lights to the instrument panel and any other lights I would really love the input. I have a feeling I'm just going to be driving around with a blanket to drop over them, though.

Turning the brightness down doesn't really work well either.

Unless the 22 is different from my 16, I'm able to turn every light off on the interior except for the indicator that says my headlights are on. Besides that everything is black.

 

On my ‘16 there is a knob/dial left of steering wheels that allows you to adjust instrument cluster
Also on the audio map screen thingamajig, there is an option under like settings or general to turn screen off
Music n stuff will still play but it will be dark

The dimmer dial won't turn the lights off like older models used to, that would have solved it but doesn't work. Turning the screen to the radio "OFF" doesn't really work either because the screen backlught stays illuminated.

I'm going to try to find an electrical drawing to see if I can hardwire a cutoff switch somewhere. My ultimate goal is to shutoff all of the interior lights so it doesn't mess up my night clvision as bad and because I go into the mountains to escape all the bright lights everywhere.

 

Why not just cut out a piece of cardboard to fit inside the slot of the instrument panel

 

First of all, I'm sorry you're having this issue. Are you hyper-photosensitive by chance? On my 2003 4R, may she rest in peace, and my 2019 4R, the dimmer potentiometer droops the lighting to a point I can't see it well. If yours does not, amber night vision glasses may help as another member suggested. I too use amber glasses at night. It makes a big difference.

Another potential issue is the legality of turning off your dashboard in particular. If I was going to install a cut-off switch, I'd put it in series with the dimmer switch. I hope it works out for you.

For your instrument cluster you can always apply a tint to it, so at the lowest brightness setting it will be dark, but allows you to see it again as you turn it up.

Outside of doing that, in any form of accident that involves speed … if an investigation is done (depending on severity of accident or size of claim), this could be a loophole for insurance to not pay out, or risk of police charges depending on area of incident.
