Increased noise with bigger tires?

I recently bought the 2020 Nightshade V6 and would like some thicker tires than the stock ones...nothing over-the-top. Husband says they'd increase the road noise. By a lot?

 

Road noise will be affected more by the type of tires you install than by the size. Generally, the more aggressive the tread pattern, the louder the tire. But, some are better than others. And, AT's in general are much better than they used to be for daily drivers.

Your best bet is to read reviews of the tires you are looking at and see how they're rated for road noise.

As @Snickel Fritz mentioned, you'll need modifications if you go much larger than stock, but a small increase usually doesn't cause problems.

 

The stock tires Toyota puts on everything but the Pro, in my opinion are garbage for a 4WD vehicle.

I had new tires put on the same day as I bought my 2019 Off Road.
I took the vehicle directly to Discount Tire and had them put on a set of 265/70R17 Falken Wildpeak AT3W 115T SL tires:

Being the same size / height as stock, none of the issues Snickel Fitz mentioned apply.
They are a beefier off road - All Terrain Tire. They are very similar in weight as the stock tires, weighing only a few pounds more.

I've taken off road on multiple occasions and they are holding up well. Being close to the same weight at the stock tires, MPG has stayed the same.
They are a bit thicker than the stock Highway Tires that came on the 4Runner.

Are they louder? A bit but anything that is knobby will be louder on the highway.

I also have set of Falken Wildpeaks on my Nissan Frontier Pickup and have been very happy with them.

 

Haha! Mine had 1300 miles on them when they were replaced. I did KO2's, but am considering Falkens for my next set.

 

Congrats on a great purchase, kteach, and welcome to the forum! There are a lot of variables with tires, and a few of the obvious ones have been mentioned already. I use BFG KO2’s stock size on my ORP and I don’t consider them unacceptable for noise. Usually luggy tires start off quiet and get louder as they get miles on them. This can be due to subtle alignment issues, that affect the wear of the tire, that can introduce cupping and variations in the wear pattern that can be even hard to see. 4X4 vehicles that are used off road are more susceptible to this because of the rough terrain they endure. Be religious about alignment, and buy a good quality tire, and noise shouldn’t be a big factor for you. There are some great threads on here about tires, and the folks on here have tried most of the brands and you can benefit from their collective experience. What works for them will work for you as well.
