If you are going to supply torque numbers…

…perhaps make sure they are correct.

Just finished installing the Apex Overland recovery points.

When it came time to start torquing everything down, the locking washer for the largest bolt got absolutely obliterated.

I have no idea where the pieces went.

I half expected this to happen given other reports I saw online, but had hoped the perhaps those were dated and no longer applied.

I’d be curious to know what the torque value should have been - cause I know that it ain’t 70ft/lbs.

 

What is the marking on the bolt head?

I don't think 70ft/lbs is excessive for that kind of bolt.

Sorry I thought the bolt exploded. Just a POS washer if you ask me.

Is your torque wrench properly calibrated?

 

Could be. I now have a box of extras.

Brand new, so it’s as good as the factory that produced it. I have an older one somewhere that I didn’t trust enough to use.

 

I think the washer was just crap. It wasn't flexible so when you tried to flatten it, it broke apart.

 

Two ugga-duggas with the 3/8" impact on setting '3'

Some torque wrenches have high internal friction and won't click if you go slow. I snapped a wheel stud before I learned about this.

 

Thankfully mine seems to function as intended.

Ideally I won't get around to using the recovery points until I'm in a position to upgrade to a winch. I keep trying to decide whether sliders, a lift, or a winch is what needs to come next.
