Ice cap or underground. Which one?

Sadly my 1 1/2 month old trd off-road premium got rear ended and unfortunately is being totaled. Man I loved this color but I guess they are done with the 5th gen and not making anymore.

everything said and done will be getting a new 4Runner hopefully soon but no solar octane . Cant decide on these two colors icecap or underground. What do you guys think

 

They totaled it out because of THAT? Wow.

I'd get an Underground color. I've seen one in person and it changes colors depending on the amount of sunlight or shade hitting it. I think it's kinda cool.

 

They totaled it because the frame was damaged. I was told that it would take 8 months to order and do a frame swap. Good thing is Allstate is paying off.

I am leaning towards underground but my wife and daughter are for ice cap. My friend said his bringing in an underground next week so we can start from there. Sadly is not solar octane.

 

That doesn't even look that bad. Is the frame bent? I was rear ended in my 92 back in 96 and it did $9k worth of damage and was fixed. It looked much worse than that.

I would go with Underground but I do like the Icecap color though. Tough choice but if I lived in the south, I would go with Icecap.

Edit: didn't see your post about the frame. That makes sense then.

yeah I don’t get it either. it’s annoying as hell but they went with totaling it. I guess for the insurance the cost of fixing it would out cost the value of the vehicle.

 

Is it true that ice cap has no clear coat?

 

Not sure where you're located, but there are plenty of 5th gens still available in my area.

I'm surprised it got totaled over that.

it was nice having solar octane. Here in Hawaii every one drives a 4Runner or Tacoma. I can say that in my town I was the only one with that color because everyone either has white or silver gray.

 

Saw both colors yesterday.....definitely Underground!

 

My vote is for Underground.

 

Only frame damage I can imagine is to the rear cross member that the hitch attaches to - do they get frame replacement for that since they won't cut off and weld a new one? I think there was another thread about that on here.

Can't believe the 4runner gets totaled for that. They should have made that rear cross member as a bolt-on piece with a dozen bolts for strength so it could be replaced easily.

I was thinking the same thing. But I guess it’s not worth fixing vs paying it off in the Allstate mind. But it’s ok. My wife brought up a good point and that is we don’t know what other damages that might come up in the future if they were going to fix it. Just take the lost and get a new one.

 

Has Toyota fixed the white paint issues the Tacomas had with the paint chipping off? Or is that just attributed to poor paint maintenance by the owners?

I have a 2014 Super White that looks brand new... besides the few off road rocks scratches on it.

I don't understand what everyone freaks out about on the white toyotas. Mine is immaculate and 10 years old.

 

Take this into consideration I have read numerous posts on Facebook if you are anal be prepared for swirls and scratches on the underground because it easily happens. If you go that route have PPF done on it. Yes I have owned enough white Toyotas. My AG was the same way.

 

It would be Terra for me.

 

Ice Cap (what I bought) - or Terra. I like the stormtrooper look, and I wasn't paying markup for Terra.

 

They want to close the claim and not deal with an 8-9-10 month job. I’m sure they reached the threshold and if they didn’t they figure once in comes apart they would only find more problems and don’t want to deal with the supplementals. To be honest I wouldn’t want it anymore either because you don’t know if there was any transmission damages. I was an adjuster a ways back and rear hard hits sometimes produce transmission damages that don’t reveal themselves immediately. You could find a 5th gen used with low mileage as an option. When I needed a vehicle I wanted a 5th gen before 2020 and that was in 2022 to avoid all the electronic gadgets that the 2020 began to see.

That’s what we came to conclusion with because we did t want something popping up in the future. While driving it for a while my wife notice a burning smell in the cab when in the freeway. It might be something or nothing but she was like I’m not taking a chance.

Between those two, Underground and Ice Cap, I'd definitely choose silver.

If you don't mind a little damage, I'd ask the insurance what the buy-back price is on it and keep driving it. I did that my old QX4 after a fender bender that they totaled it out on it and drove it for another 8 years (only had fender damage).

Went with Underground. My friend found me a deal and got 4,500$ off so I couldn’t pass it.

 

What I've been told from a Toyota engineer is that Ice Cap was the response to the Super White paint failures. The paint code is identical other than an extra zero (0040 vs 040), and the pigmentation is the same. The only difference is that Ice Cap is now a 2-stage paint like the others and not single-stage like Super White.

What he couldn't tell me was whether it was just the old Super White with added clear... Hoping it is because that would make it a crazy durable finish with hardener in the color layer too.
