So, I changed my oil last night and I know the 2021 4runner calls for about 6.6 quarts of oil. So I purchased 7 quarts of Amsoil 0w -20 and proceeded to change my oil . I drove around for about 10 minutes prior to changing the oil to put some heat into the engine. I drained all of the oil with the drain plug and let it drip out for about 5 minutes then drained the oil filter and replaced it with a new filter. I then added 6 quarts of oil then i started the truck and let it run then i checked the oil level with the dipstick. I was about halfway between the indication marks on the dip stick. I then added an additional half quart of oil and repeated the process. when checking the dip stick after adding the additional half quart of oil i was then above the full marks on the dipstick by about 3/8".

I'm wondering if i should try to drain some of the oil out using the oil filter drain tool and a small ball valve or if i should just leave the oil in the truck. I know adding too much oil can cause a long list of issues with the motor but i am unsure how much an extra half quart of oil is really going to effect the motor.

If anyone has experience doing this please help !

    Oooh look, another mod.....
Over filling your engine can cause major issues. Drain a small amount out first, check the dip stick, and repeat until you're just below the "full" marking on your dipstick.

Extra half quart isn't going to hurt anything.

    All good

If you drained it as you said and put in 6.5 qt, I'd be hard pressed to think you overfilled it. did you let the engine sit for a few after shutting off before checking the dipstick? I'd check again hot, cold (this technically isn't proper) and see what they say.

I just checked it cold this morning after it sat for about 3 hours and it was showing about 3/8" past the full mark on the dipstick. I don't think I am extremely overfilled but obviously I would want it to be perfect. Has anyone else had this happen before ?

How do you know your dipstick isn't off? Drain hot and check cold. If you put 6.5 qts in you are good!

Hmm, I'm wondering where the discrepancy is coming from.

What I can think of is:
    • Vehicle isn't level when measuring
    • Error when filling (but it's easy to see if you have half a quart left over)
    • Not drained enough (but it dripped)
    • Oil filter not changed (but it was)
    • Are you cleaning dipstick before checking?

"Perfect" and the shitty 1GR dipstick design are mutually exclusive. I just put in the 6.6 qt and move on. Fool's errand trying to be any more precise with this dipstick design.

A little over full won't likely hurt anything but I do go by the dipstick, not the stated capacity. Just easier to keep track of usage. After I change the oil & filter, I fill it close to the full line, start the engine and check for leaks. Then I shut it off and fill it to the line.

Blacked out badges, window deflectors, smoked 3rd brake light. I have a Borla muffler on order as well as some color matched engine cover stickers. I'll be painting the stock wheels soon as well. Falken tires in the fall as well.
