I need Mud flaps for pro that don’t melt!

The stock mud flaps were not keeping the rocks from chipping the rear doors so I upgraded to Rokblokz….and they provide awesome coverage. But the passenger rear melted. Do Rekgens withstand exhaust heat better?

 

Is that the TRD exhaust? Seems like a design flaw to have it exit right on the mudflap.

 

It is the TRD exhaust….it didn’t melt the stock though. Tundras exit out the side as well.

 

How do the rear mud flaps protect the rear passenger doors?

I'd put the stock ones back on.

 

Well they don’t….that is why I think I’m going to leave the front rokblokz on and use factory rear. Unless anyone knows if Rekgens won’t melt. I drive a lot of dirt roads and the 4 runner paint is taking a beating.

 

How do the front rockblokz look? Imagine they work good? My tires keep stones and like to discharge them at 60+ mph!

 

That's what I was thinking. I thought all of the exhausts exited out the back? Do all the TRD 4Runners exit out the side?

I imagine the reason it melted your new flap is because it's wider than the OEM. How about calling RokBloks and asking them for a replacement flap and explain the situation to them?

Don't feel too bad. OEM off the floor KTM enduros have an exhaust that melts off the turn signal within the first few miles of riding.

 

The fronts are perfect….wider, longer, have a cut out around the body mount.

 

OK I have an idea that will solve your issue and look really cool!! Remove the flap, get a heat gun and flatten the bubble (or trim it out). Then cut two pieces of thin aluminum sheet and sandwich them with small panned bolts/cap nuts or rivets. It will look clean if you file carefully. I also use a 60 grit wheel on drill bit or Scotchbrite to roughen it up. Before you cut your aluminum make a cardboard pattern that forms perfectly to the shape of the flap. You only need to make it large enough to cover the melted area with just a bit of overlap.

Here is something similar I did recently when making a mount for my dual battery components:

 

Something like this. I'm not very good at freehand but you get the idea. You want to make are there are no sharp edges. This way the polymers integrity will stay intact. After zooming in on your pic this bubble will be very easy to just flatten out with a hammer or pressed out with a block of wood and heat gun.

 

I am surprised they don’t make a heat shield type of thing like this for their product. Also interesting that the stock ones don’t melt….this is maybe 1/2” wider I’m guessing.

 

I'd be interested to hear what RokBlokz says but I'm not sure there is much they will do as their website specifically says these are not for the side exhaust vehicles.

Good looking mud flaps though. As yours the standard or XL size?

 

How come Toyota can make plastic that doesn’t melt in close proximity to the exhaust tip, which includes both the back bumper and the back mudflap, but these “racing experts” can’t?

 

Good question. They also list "Won't crack or warp from temperature extremes" in their description so hopefully they will warranty the part.

If you compare the Factory to the aftermarket it's much narrower and the exhaust heat does not hit it.

 

I reached out to RokBlokz and they do plan on making a higher temp rated model at some point…..no time frame yet. They will give me a discount on a set of rears when they come out. I also contacted RekGen and they will not be making a high temp rated one at this time.

 

So I think the aluminum sandwich might be your best option. It won't be symmetrical but I believe it will still look nice. Remember you can see only one side of the vehicle at a time....

 

except since I took this picture the other day it’s melted and warped about 50% of the mud flap! Since it’s still functional, I’ll leave it on until it’s looks really bad! Then I’ll put the factory rears back on. At least the fronts will keep the chipping down.

 

That will be a good compromise.
