I can't seem to get all of the features I want in one 2022 4Runner?

    Hello fellow 4Runner owners!

I've owed a 2004 SR5 4WD with XReas and KDSS since it had only 13000 miles on it and today turned 392790 miles after being well maintained over the years.

When new, my girlfriend and I won a steep hill climb contest against Jeeps, Blazers, Bronco’s and other wannabe’s… it was a lot of incredible fun!

I’ve used it mostly as a work vehicle hauling tools, materials and supplies for the swimming pool construction company I own. I tell everyone it's the very best work vehicle I've ever owned and far easier to work out of than a pick up or a van.

It still runs and handles pretty much as new, although the interior and exterior are pretty beat up from the Arizona sun and careless employees that have done some minor body and interior damage from time to time. The lesson is: Don't let employees or anyone else drive it unless you just don't care.

Now I'm looking to buy a new 2022 4Runner. I've read through some other post regarding the similar issues and have been on Toyota's web site for months and can't seem to get all of the features I want in one vehicle.

It seems crazy that we cannot order exactly what we want in one vehicle and I’m not impressed with what I’m hearing and seeing in the 2023 model 4Runner.

I've driven the Limited edition and want the vented/heated seats yet prefer the look of the TRD Off-Road Premium or TRD Pro.

Perhaps some of you could please steer me in the right direction before I go to Toyota?

The following is my list of requirements and questions:

    - Vented/Heated seats (or at least Black/Graphite Softex)

    - Premium Audio

    - Technology Package

    - KDSS (I've especially enjoyed it on fast on and off ramps! Is it necessary?)

    - TRD Front Skid Plate (Knocks out the KDSS)

    - TRD Performance Exhaust (Will it improve mileage?)

    - Trail Running Boards

    - Cargo Tray (Is it necessary or noisy and will it level the whole back more?)

    - The only issue I've had on my 2004 4Runner is that when the second-row seats are down, they are tilted and not totally flat! Is it possibly to make the whole back flat?

I also would like your feedback on lifting, leveling and pricing too.

I’m looking forward to hearing from you soon!

    Thank you,

    Tom

“You can’t always git what you want…”

You’ll have to check out the features and available options by model here:
    https://www.toyota.com/content/dam/toyota/brochures/pdf/2022/4runner_ebrochure.pdf

The stock ORP seems to be closest to your requirements. You can buy skid plates and running boards separately, or maybe a dealer add-on package. The TRD exhaust is just a noise maker. Level the back with plywood like others have done. You will soon enjoy the world of 4Runner modifications. Have fun!

What is the most important feature(s)?
Vented seats are only on the limited I believe.
No KDSS and Xreas on the same vehicle. Just on road driving, get the Xreas on the limited.
Good luck finding a rear slide out cargo tray.
    Exhaust just noise.
Don’t worry about the running boards, after market options plenty.

good luck, 4runners are not the easiest to get right now.

Our friends North of the 49th Parallel actually can come close to checking those boxes with the exception of the Limited seats.
As for the exhaust, I am glad mine does not have it, but some prefer that. Does not make an appreciable difference with performance.

Depending on region, KDSS can be difficult to find and pricing is one of those deals where MSRP should be the goal. While the blessed few around here (pre COVID) were able to get a few thousand off, that is not generally the case. Especially with Pro’s and to a lesser extent ORP’s. This is actually a good thing in relation to resale value.

Get a limited and swap the front end to a pro. Not hard. Get the trd wheels, there ya go. A lot of people complain about drone with the trd pro exhaust.

I work for the company that owns Southeast Toyota Distributors (SET) and I am able to order a new vehicle through the associate purchase program. I have had a 2022 4Runner TRD Off Road Premium on order for several months. I had ordered it with KDSS and the Birds-Eye view cameras. I was recently informed that I had to choose one because I could not get both on the same vehicle. Annoying but it is what it is. I chose the KDSS as I have it on my 2020 4Runner and like it. Hopefully, it should be here next month. Then, I have to start removing everything that I added to my 2020 4Runner so I can swap it to the new one.

That is interesting that the build mix does not offer both. For sure I would have done the same. Similarly, when my ORP got crushed in less than a week, the only two I could get were an ORP with moonroof sans KDSS and a Venture with KDSS sans moonroof.
    What color did you choose?

Edit: Is bird’s eye offered on ORP’s or is it exclusive to the Pro?

For 2022, Toyota offers the “Off-Road Premium Plus” package on the ORP that has the bird’s eye view cameras.

I chose white. My 2020 is black. I love the vehicle but I have OCD when it comes to vehicle cleanliness. That and a black vehicle do not mix well. My Tacoma is white and while Toyota’s white paint quality is suspect, I opted for the paint protection film on the hood and I plan to have it ceramic coated after I get it so hopefully that will help. I have the paint protection film on my 2020 and it has held up well this far.

    Nice call.
I am becoming more and more a fan of white 4Rs. Recently saw a white Venture and really dug it with the black valences. My 100 Series was white and all in all I liked it.

My wife hates white vehicles, but we saw one blacked out the other day and she commented about how it looked nice.

My wife is why I bought the black one. She said “You always get white” which is basically true. “Why don’t you get something different for once”. I knew shortly after buying it that I should have bought white.

I ended up with Luna Rock instead of waiting for an Army Green due to wife influence.

I knew I should have purchased a white one immediately after buying my Nautical Blue. I have hated keeping that thing clean since day one, but I parked next to a white one the other day and the white one was so boring next to my NB one. The guy asked me as we walked by if the blue one was mine and I said yes. He said that it looked amazing and he wished he got NB. So we talked for a few minutes and ever since that day I have been appreciating what a different color the NB really is. Still hate cleaning it.

so was in similar boat last fall when i was looking for a 2022.. i ended up settling for my SR5 Premium with most of the options i wanted and rest i will just bolt on or i learned i really didnt need... of course i had to have 3rd row.. so no TRD for me.. and black was a no go or that deep blue they have... etc. etc.. i lucked into a silver SR5P that had most of the now defunct XP package on it minus the black trd wheels ... im actually seeing a lot of similar 22 4runners in my area of Ohio with the XP package options minus the black trd wheels.. guess yota must be trying to off load all of the predator rails, blackouts, etc..

Just keep looking and make sure you are on the call back list at dealers across your state and also stick to close to MSRP .. also have your phone on... i missed a call from a dealer and called back 10 minutes later and the 4runner was already spoken for... next call i took at had to drive 3 hrs to pick up after a month wait (they had someone back out of an ordred vehicle and i snagged it while it was being offloaded from the boart and prepped in west coast)... be ready to drop your $$$ deposit so have that ready ... and then just keep looking ... autotrader, all the yota dealers within your area and state(s)... have fun...

As mentioned already, these were never available on the same 4Runner. It wasn't an option until 2010 on a 4Runner, and then it was only available on the Trail edition followed by the Off-road.

    Nearly 400K miles! That's awesome!

I believe the heated/vented seats are a Limited only option. Softex is available on any trim with the premium package.

KDSS is only available on the off-road. A Limited with XREAS should handle better on-road than other trims.

The TRD skid plate looks nice, but it's not really a serious skid plate. Aftermarket skids are generally much stronger.

The exhaust will make it louder. It will not add power or improve fuel economy.

I'm pretty sure running boards can be added to any trim. But, the Limited might not be compatible with some due to the different body trim.

If working at the dealer doesn't help, nothing will, makes me feel a little better! When I first asked the dealer we chose (no markup over MSRP, and no waiting list), he seemed to think he could order a TRD ORP with KDSS, MTM (Multi Terrain Monitor 3D camera), and sliding rear Cargo Deck. In the end, we only got the KDSS, which was our #1 priority. He said right now, the supply chain shortages and shutdowns in Japan have made ordering anything beyond what a dealer's standard allotments are are no longer possible. He said even Port installed options like TRD Pro wheels are impossible at the moment. He said he could order a set, but have to pay for them separately on top of the vehicle cost :(.

Sounds like the trim level that hits most of your Wants is the Limited. Here's what you get...

    - Vented/Heated seats (or at least Black/Graphite Softex) Only way to get vented seats is in Leather. You also get Memory seats :D.

    - Premium Audio Comes with JBL + Subwoofer

    - Technology Package You basically get all the bells and whistles, including Parking Sensors, Remote Start/Connect, Panoramic Rear Camera, Auto Headlights, Auto Dual Zone Climate Control

    - KDSS (I've especially enjoyed it on fast on and off ramps! Is it necessary?) You get XRAES instead, great for on-road handling. We LOVE KDSS on our TRD ORP, and XRAES gives a similar stability

    - TRD Front Skid Plate (Knocks out the KDSS) Standard steel skid plates

    - TRD Performance Exhaust (Will it improve mileage?) I would never want this, too annoying on long drives

    - Trail Running Boards You can order power Auto Runningboards if you like, or easily add anything else later

    - Cargo Tray (Is it necessary or noisy and will it level the whole back more?) I really wanted it, as it does level the cargo area when you drop the second row seats. But from what I found, the Sliding Rear Cargo Deck is impossible to get on anything but a Trail Edition right now.
