I can't seem to get a straight answer from a dealer on this.

I want a '22 TRD ORP in Barcelona Red w/ KDSS, Dash Camera, Roof Rack Crossbars, and the 2-port USB addon.

I don't want a moonroof or anything else.

I can "Build" it at Toyota.com (a '21) and giving them my zip code still allows this exact build, however, I'm being told that I won't be able to get it without a moonroof.

What's the point of the "Build" option on the website if you can't actually get it how you configure it?

They just want to be difficult and make your life miserable. It’s what dealerships do.

thats not actually whats happening, but it seems to always feel that way. You cannot build a custom order. Toyota doesn’t allow it and right now they are setting up for the 2022 model year. So no new allocation on 2021 and no orders available yet for 2022.

what you can do is ask for something specific, and they can check for an allocation. If its close, then cool. If not, then they may be able to trade one of their allocations for another dealers.

Given the market sentiment for 4runners, they will not likely bother with the allocation trade right now, so you will probably need to call around till you find a dealer with an allocation that fits your build.

I think it mostly depends on your region. In the southeast all premiums come with a sunroof. That's just how it is, unless one slips through.

I believe that the Off Road Premiums all come with a sun/moon roof.

When I built mine which is now starting surface rust on frame the 2021 ORP could be ordered with or without the moonroof.

It is listed as I believe $950 option on my sticker. I know I requested it.

It could be regional thing though as mentioned above. I am in Michigan and that’s how it was here

How does it work with the port installed options like running boards, dash camera, charging ports, etc? Is that all decided by Toyota before it's built or can that stuff be changed after it's allocated to the dealer?

I just didn't realize it worked this way as my brother ordered a 2500HD and he configured it exactly how he wanted it.

I've just always purchased off of the lot until now.

You have to order all that stuff prior to allocation. Even the port installed items. My suggestion is build online then print to PDF and email sales managers at your dealers. You will then have exact MSRP of your build and be able to better shop also.

I already bought wheels and running boards

My advice is to find a smaller dealer in your area if possible or reasonable distance. I had a hard time finding one that would order for me and give me an allocation. Then one night I got lucky a woman I called said yep I can do it and she was the one who did the ordering and she gave me a fair price.

I'll give it a shot. I libe in a town of 5K and the nearest dealer is in a town of 60K 25 minutes away which is who I spoke with today. The next one is an hour away and ha 50K people. I have spoken with them as well and will see what they say about ordering for me.

Hopefully I can get it done.

    Thanks!

Everything you want should be discussed when you “order”, but the factory doesn’t do the running boards and some things, those are done when it gets to port.

I found it depends on the accessory options you want. For instance, you can order the slide out deck or you can order the KDSS. But if you want both then you have to get the moonroof.

It does not matter which manufacturer you decide to purchase from. All of them have limitations on how you can configure your vehicle. Toyota seems to be the one of the strictest when it comes to getting just what you want.

On the other side of the coin you have Chrysler/Fiat. It is mind boggling how much you can customize and configure those vehicles! The Ram and Jeep line are an example of fully customizable right from the factory.

I do not mean to sound harsh but it is time to find another dealer. You can get just what you described. I built that exact vehicle on the Toyota Configurator. Total MSRP $46,249.

On a side note you have to keep in mind the current market shift to sellers being the boss when you are purchasing a vehicle. Dealerships and their sales staff are being jerks right now. If you want to see proof of this simply walk into a dealership and look around at the low inventory. You will be hard pressed to have a salesmen approach you.

Supply is low and vehicle demand is very high right now. New and used.

My 21' ORP has the moonroof, but it is shown as an option.

That doesn't sound harsh at all as this dealership also marks up the TRD Pro vehicles by several thousand dollars which annoys me.

I questioned the exact same thing about why I could build it on Toyota's Configurator for my region yet he was saying it wasn't going to happen. It sucks because I like the guy, however, I simply don't want a moonroof.

I'll probably wind up going to the dealer that's about an hour away as he hasn't stated that what I want isn't possible...yet. They also never mark up vehicles which I appreciate. I guess we'll see when the time to order actually comes.

I can't speak for the moon roof. I can however help you understand the "ordering" process a little bit better. I had to do a bunch of research and ask a lot of questions to really get a grasp for it.

You can't really "order" a custom build from Toyota. You can go to a dealership and tell them what you're wanting. If the dealership feels they can get a specific build like you're wanting, they'll put in a request for an allocation to get it. If the allocation gets approved, the configuration of your build is sent to Japan. Then Japan will put on the factory accessories you wanted and ship it to whatever country you're in. It'll reach port and there they will install any more accessories that the factory didn't install.

Long story short, it all depends on if your dealership gets the allocation for your specific vehicle.

Also, I have no idea if a dealership would feel comfortable telling you they can get a specific vehicle right now since Toyota is probably right in the middle of transitioning over to making the 2022's.

I have a larger town about 50 minutes away that has most all brands of dealerships. We take our VW sportswagen there for service. This same dealer also sells Toyotas.

We have a smaller town 25 minutes away & the Toyota dealership there is the only import marque in town.

Most all the new car dealers right now are basically a catalog showrooms. It has to be great for their overhead by not paying for units sitting on their lot.

Well I sold our ‘21 JLU Willys in about 6hrs on CL. It wasn’t a bad vehicle, but wasn’t a great daily, and now I’m looking for a ‘21 4Runner.

We like the service department at VW dealer, so decided to try the dealer at the larger town first. Well I would have put money down on one last week (that’s in transit), but the salesman wouldn’t come off MSRP. I think the catalog showroom comment went over his head.

With the 2022s right around the corner I think I’ll wait for them. They are receiving some minor updates that I’d prefer any how. Perhaps I should also check with the smaller dealership as well...

Thank you for that!! Sorry to hijack this thread but I have been looking and researching for the last few months for a true 4wd that will be comfortable for both the wife and I on long trips. I already have a truck I really like so Jeep and 4 Runner are the only other choices for a frame on 4wd with low range.

My uncle has a full blown optioned out Rubicon. I was really tempted to get a Jeep but just know it is not going to be a comfortable road trip and daily driver vehicle for my wife and I.

you are correct, it’s the Off road that the moon roof is standard. It’s counter intuitive, the normal off road has a moon roof, but the premium doesn’t?

Thats weird, I have the Off Road Premium, but I had to add the moonroof as an option for $630 and specify it. Below is the build sheet dealer sent to me to confirm everything.

Yeah, everything seems to come in a package with Toyota, usually. Mine only came with KDSS and and all season floor may package (which the dealer didn't seem to know until I took delivery and we saw the other floor mats in the cargo area).

    That is weird.

Here's what the Toyota website let me build for my zip code so I sent it to the other dealer as he wanted to see it and see what he could find out.

He said he'll get back to me tomorrow as he's on vacation today.

Hopefully he has good news and then when the 2022 specs are out I can actually place an order.

In the past we’ve a owned:

    2003 4Runner V8 AWD.

We really liked it. Did light off roaring and took it on many 8 to 10 hour (one way) road trips.

But we hated the dealership. The service department was the most incompetent I had ever dealt with. It was probably one of the main reasons I sold it.

2009 Jeep Rubicon JKU - manual / hard top

More off roading but fewer road trips. Nothing more then 3hrs one way. Awesome Service after the sale. We always had another vehicle for longer road trips. It was my wife’s daily half the time we owned it, and mine the other half.

2013 Jeep Rubicon JKU - auto / hard top

More off roading but fewer road trips. Nothing more then 3hrs one way. It was my wife’s daily the time we owned it.

We had other vehicles for longer road trips. WRX & Focus ST.

2021 Jeep Willys JLU - manual / soft top

We got the soft top as it was to be a 3 seasons vehicle. It was also our 3rd vehicle.

We really didn’t care for the clutch & the gearing. Our daughter also starts going to school next month & our winters are pretty harsh. Turns out my wife also hates my winter beater (I don’t blame her either). So it leaves her with only her daily (VW Sportswagen 4motion).

So I decided to go from 3 vehicles down to 2 solid vehicles that can be driven year around.

Lastly my job here in Michigan comes to an end in less then 2yrs. We are serious considering relocating to the East TN or Western VA area.

Nothing really bad to say about a Jeep. They are great fun, but would be a drag to drive back & forth (in the long haul) on my job hunt.

On a side note I'd never actually seen a Barcelona Red 4Runner in person so we drove the Blueberry over to look at it last night. I told them before coming over I was waiting for a '22 but I wanted to see the color in person before ordering so as not to waste their time.

    I really like the color!

I have TRD Matte Gray wheels and Trail running boards already in the garage waiting for the new 4Runner :)

See and this is what's so infuriating. In this thread alone I'm getting conflicting answers. Why bother making a website to allow for the customization of a vehicle that is specific down to the zip code?

Toyota can't seriously just tell a dealership that they are getting a Super White 4Runner with 6 random options without the dealer okaying it can they?

Toyota can do whatever it wants. My dealer is very up-front and they just get allocations through their middle-management sales rep, who tries their best to satisfy all their dealers in their region with what the dealers' customers want. The "configurator" is really just to show off how you could potentially get it, not how you would necessarily get it (especially if you wanted one on shorter than longer notice).

Every dealer seems to have a different story. When mine just told me they got the allocation, they wanted me to go over the options before the order locked in and was given a VIN. So, I'm pretty sure I could have made any last minute changes right there and they would have ordered it as such.

That makes sense to me. Once it's been allocated and finalized there are no changes.

I really hope it works out that way with my alternate dealer option. I'm done with the one that I went to yesterday to check out the color as overnight they added $5K to that Venture's price.

If I can't order one how I want it I guess I'll find the closest match I can online and just drive/fly out and get it when the time comes. I'm not paying over MSRP though as we can live with one vehicle indefinitely. I just want a second vehicle and the ability to tow my trailer.
