Do you take your car to a dealership, if so, how much do you pay?
Or do you use your own scanner? If so, which one can you recommend?

Take your car to Autozone - they'll scan it for free.

I use the BlueDriver Bluetooth scanner. This is probably a mid grade scanner but it does the job.

Amazon/ebay has a bunch of cheap scanners for $20. Just get one. I think literally all of them will give you the code numbers (which you can then google) and a way to reset them. You can use them for all your cars. So much money can be saved by clearing the codes and seeing if it comes back. Our rigs are NOTORIOUS for O2 and Air/Fuel Mixture sensor codes that once cleared never come back for thousands of miles.
