Hey all, new to the Toyota fam and 4runners and looking for a sanity check of sorts. I have a 19 ORP and comparing this to my previous vehicle, it seems to ‘hold a gear’ when going down hills. Basically going down some hills in the ORP I can maintain a speed down the hill without using the brake or manually downshifting, and the truck doesn’t seem to be downshifting either. My previous vehicle would’ve gained speed the whole time down the hill unless I manually downshifted or rode the brake a bit and the downhill assist kicked in and it would downshift accordingly.

Any insight is appreciated, sorry for the long winded question!

What's the question? There's not a single question mark in that whole paragraph haha

If you have Cruise Control engaged it will try to maintain the set speed.

no cruise control engaged. I’m assuming what I’m experiencing is normal, just wasn’t expecting it. Seems like the torque converter is locked and just holding speed. I can literally drive down modest hills with my foot slightly on the gas and not increase speed. Sound normal?

In overdrive? Or S5? In sport mode the transmission usually stays in the selected gear, unless you punch the throttle and it downshifts.

Have you accidently nudged the shift lever to the left and it drops a gear?

In OD, shows D on the HUD, rpm stays fairly low, like below 2k, but vehicle speed remains pretty consistent. Maybe this truck just has a lot more engine braking then I’m used too?

I did drop it into sport/manual shifting and it did change the HUD to the corresponding gear and it did drop a gear.

They DO engine brake sometimes. But, it's usually when you're braking.

It could have something to do with what you're used to. Mine only seems to gain speed on steeper hills.

Thanks, I feel it may be me not being used to it. It doesn’t shift weird or anything, just different experience.
