My name is Ron.Just signed up today. I'm a DIYer trying to take good care of my 95 SR5 4runner. Currently AC stopped working after paying to add freon. Mechanic blamed bad compressor. Any help will do. Thanks.

There are a lot of possibilities, the compressor could be the source but usually wasn't whenever we got ac jobs at my shop. Could be the compressor clutch not fully engaging or slipping, but there are other things that can't really be diagnosed without equipment.

When you turn on your ac, open the hood and listen for the compressor to click on. It's easier to have the engine running and then have a helper turn on the ac while you listen

I guess I should say that compressors do fail, but usually if they fail internally they seize from loose metal. If you're able to grab the front of the compressor hub (engine off) and turn it by hand, that's a good sign.

If the insides self destruction, you're best off replacing the other components as well and flushing the remaining lines, cause those metal shards will clog the small passageways in the condenser (by the radiator) and evaporator (under the dashboard)
