    Hi everybody. I’m new here, and I have a problem. I admit it. But it’s a good kinda problem. I have two 4Runners. I need to sell one. Sophie’s choice! I love them both!


    I’ve even been closely tracking MPG’s to help me decide. Even going so far as to have each truck weighed at a semi-scale at the Flyin’ J just after filling the tank, and deducting my weight from the result.


    The 2000 weighs right at 4000 lbs

    The 1999 weighs 3,740

    The ‘99 seems to get roughly .8 to 1.5 mpg better. Without lift and 33’s, I’m betting it would be more like 2-3 mpg better.

    In my opinion the 2.7 does just about as well as the 3.4, taking into account that it’s 260 pounds lighter than the 2000. The 3.4 is not that powerful. But going up steep highway inclines here in SoCal I do have to rev the 2.7 harder to maintain speed.

    The 99 is more fun (truck like), but the 00 is just nicer!


    I’m in a conundrum.


    2000. 3.4 5 spd manual Rear Diff Locker 135k.

    Having the leather redone as we speak. Nice, tight, quiet. Almost Lexus-like ride.

    1999. 2.7 4cyl 5 speed manual. 235k. Really nice throughout. Lifted w/33’s. SUPER nice and fun to drive. I’d compare this to a Tacoma in the way it drives (which I REALLY like).

    I'd sell the '99. It has 100k more miles and you can build the 2000 to your liking. Or swap the parts from the '99 to the '00, then sell it.

    That's an easy no brainer.

    YES it is! I bought it knowing that it wasn’t the best quality lift. I even looked into removing it and returning it to stock, but it was more expensive than doing a better lift. So, I had it aligned and left it.

    So your vote is keep the 00?

    The 4 cylinder is extremely reliable, but not even comparable to the other rig.

    I would hope the "lifted" rig was only fetching like $5k whereas the stock one with rear locker is easily a $10-12k rig.

    Yeah, no. The ‘99 is worth 17-18k, and the ‘00 is into the low-mid 20k range. Go an Bring-A-Trailer and see what these are fetching.

    Love the color of the 99 but I would definitely keep the 2000.

    Armored, Dobinson's lift, 33's, MC TacoBox, Frontrunner rack, light overland mods, M8000 winch.
    My opinion:
    Easy choice. Keep the 2000

    Lower miles
    Better 3.4l engine
    Rear locker
    and personally, I like the Silver finish much more.

    Good luck deciding.

    The '99 with 235k miles, base model, and cheap lift with a 4 cylinder is not worth $17k. Yes I'm familiar with BAT but that was a basic 4R with a cheap lift and an undesirable engine.

    I just helped my friend pick up a clean AF 4R, 4x4, V6, with manual transmission about 2-3 weeks ago for $7,500. Asking price was $8k.

    Only add-ons it really had were a new clutch, flywheel, throw out bearing and any associated parts all OEM or Marlin Crawler. I was there to do a complete and thorough inspection of it as it was 1hr from me (but 4hrs from where he lived). What I should add however is that it was in pristine condition both in and out.

    Anyone can ask for all the money in the world, but that doesn't mean you'll get it.

    By your counts I should've sold my '98 4Runner Limited, Auto V6, rear locked 4x4 with King 2.5 front, King 2.5 rear, Durobump front and rear, Extended travel CV axles, Sonoran steel panhard bar, OME 890 coils, Nguyen Works dual rear swingout, B&M trans cooler installed (and whatever else I'm forgetting) for much more than $16k?

    Dude. Not here to argue numbers with you. Anyone can go to BAT and look up the price history of these and come to their own conclusions. I’m on here to try to make a tough decision more fun and get some input from a community that can contribute to the conversation in good faith. IMHO you got a fair price for a modded slushbox. Most people want stock stock stock.

    If you ever plan on selling it, got with the 2000. It will likely have better resale value. Honestly, depending on how much you drive, sit sure and calculate how much more you would be paying in gas. For instance, if you drive 20.000 miles annually, you may find the difference in fuel cost is less than $100.00. Then ask yourself, do I like the 2000 more than the other to justify the fuel expense difference.

    If it was me in your shoes, I wouldn't be considering MPGs or resale value 'down the road'. I'd go with the best truck out of the two, which is the 2000. 100k fewer miles, all stock (right?), and at this point, new leather. It's the better of the two trucks, IMO. And don't discount what your gut is telling you. They're both nice trucks, so you can't go horribly wrong either way.
