On my 2021 TRD ORP I started to have a terrible rattle / clunking sound in the steering wheel. I took the airbag off the steering wheel and found that an aluminum "block" at the top of the wheel had separated from the mount. Does anyone know what the block is there for? Does it protect the connectors to the airbag? or is it a counter weight? Do I need to replace it? If so can anyone help identify a part number? Pictures below:

Does the block look like it’s broken? Are all sides smooth, or is there a jagged side?upload_2025-1-18_8-32-8.jpg

The block is mounted, with a "rubberized material", to the black steel plate that you see in the second picture - if you look closely at the edges of the black plate in the second picture you can see some of the rubberized material - above the two screws. The rubberized material separated from the aluminum block and the steel mounting plate. I watched a few videos on replacing the steering wheel on a 5gen with an aftermarket wheel and they unscrew that plate/block with the two screws that you see and transfer it to the new steering wheel. I can not find a replacement part number on-line for this part. Check out the 6:15 mark in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U8hiJvQBbM8

Ok - I caved in called a dealer the part is a Steering Shake Damper - PN# 45713-35040. List Price is $43.25.

Looking up the part number on-line the description is interesting and reads like a maintenance part.

"The Steering Shake Damper (#45713-35040), a critical Drive-Chassis part in the Steering Wheel system, plays a vital role in preventing the steering wheel's shakes and vibrations from reaching the driver. It performs this function by absorbing the vibrations produced by the vehicle's motion over uneven roads and surfaces. This part is intricately designed to work with Toyota vehicle models, and as a genuine part, it ensures compatibility and benefits from Toyota's genuine parts warranty.

Over time, the Steering Shake Damper (#45713-35040) may degrade, leading to less effective dampening of shakes and vibrations. This could compromise the smooth operation of your vehicle, leading to discomfort during driving and potentially affecting steering control. Thus, the periodic replacement of this part is essential for maintaining the smooth and safe operation of your Toyota vehicle. The Steering Shake Damper (#45713-35040) contributes significantly to the driver's comfort and the vehicle's overall safety."
