Help! Not starting

Our son has a 2010 4Runner and is in school in Mississippi, 11 hours away. It's not starting and I don't think it's the battery. We had the battery and alternator replaced in May of this year. A jump wouldn't get it going. He said when he presses the brake the push button ignition lights up red instead of green. Does anyone know what that means? He really can't afford a tow and repair so I'm trying to get some information. Thanks!
Added note - he said the key fob is not locking or unlocking the vehicle, but he has tried both fobs. He just replaced the batteries in the fobs a month ago.

 

Dumb question... Is the transmission in "Park" or "Neutral?" Also, the brake has to be applied for the push button start to activate.
