Just bought a 98 sr5 4runner. Harmonic pully was wobbling. Pulled it off to find where the key fits in was damaged. Now i cant get the sproket off to.replace the key because it is bent. Can i take a chisel to.the sproket to break.it off.

None. Bone Stock. EXCEPT: Brushguard, tow hitch, both welded to the frame. It's good to have friends and a fully equipped garage!
I'm far from an expert on such things, being a Radar tech by trade, but wouldn't something along the lines of a bolt cutter type device work better? That way, you aren't beating on one side of the crankshaft, possibly unbalancing it, or damaging the bearings it rides in?

Just a thought. I get so few any more.

I might try using an angle grinder, but be careful not to hit the driveshaft or sprocket.

I would use a Dremel with a wheel cutter

I agree with this method. Be very patient, and very careful. You wouldn't have to cut all the way through the woodruff key - most of the way through without hitting the crankshaft. If necessary, after cutting, you could use a chisel. But I think after a careful cut, you should be able to get the gear off with penetrant (liquid wrench or equivalent) and a puller.

I would use a dremel with a grinder and not a cutting wheel. Just grind the key down to where it won't bind the sprocket taking it off.

But I don't like to live dangerously...

Take a chisel with a similar profile and lay it flat on the crank and tap it under the key, this should rotate the key out. Google “how to remove a woodruff key” and you will get the idea.

Remove the belt and heat the pulley with a heat gun, don’t get it too hot or you could ruin the main seal. Tap around the pulley with a brass punch and hammer and it should come off.

    Good luck.

Before you cut/chisel on anything try the method in this video first, you may first want to use a hammer and a punch to strike the Woodruff key on the side to sorta try and straighten it out a bit which may help loosen it a bit, be sure to use diagonal pliers (dikes) instead of just any pliers use the biggest pair you can find.

He shows it first without the crank gear on the shaft, but he explains how you would do it if the gear was still on the shaft, you basically pry against the gear.

If this doesn't work in by all means go to another more drastic/destructive method.

I'm seeing one small hole near the outer edge of the gear, is it threaded and if so is there another one on the opposite side? basic puller with 2 long bolts should pull it
