We're currently a 2 Subaru family (2017 Forester, 2018 Crosstrek). I love them both and they're fantastic in the winter here, especially with snow tires. (as an aside, it amazes me when ppl try to make these cars into hard-core off-road rock crawlers, the AWD is awesome but those clutches and diffs weren't intended for that, imho)

Anyway, I've been thinking about the idea of a 3rd vehicle (we're close to empty-nesters, 2 kids just recently out of college and a college sophomore) that is pretty reliable but doesn't need to be a daily-driver, I don't care if it gets a little dirty or scuffed, and I can do fun day trips with my Husky. An older 4Runner seemed to fit.

Been looking at roughly, 1995 to say 2008 4Runners, trying to get familiar w trim levels, options, different engine options, etc. Having fun doing a lot of window shopping at the moment.

Any pointers to FAQs or pages good for someone looking to get up to speed appreciated, too.

    Thanks!

Welcome from Canada! I have a soft place in my heart for older vehicles, but I don’t own any, full disclosure. The reason for that is any vehicle without at least 6 air bags isn’t safe, imho, as a serious accident survivor. My 2018 ORP has 8 air bags. One of the safest vehicles on the road. My only advice is to keep this in mind when buying a second hand vehicle and buy one with the most safety features you can afford. You only get to live once. No sense ending it prematurely in an accident that you would have survived had you been in a newer, modern vehicle.
