    The jewel in the crown of the gen 5 is the 1GR-FE engine mated to that bulletproof 5 speed transmission.

    Even today this engine and transmission are standard on Land Cruisers in the Middle East, arguably the harshest environment for any vehicle.

    Good to see that even in 2024 some people’s definition of a “Land Cruiser” includes six cylinders, displacing 4.0 liters.

    Are they ever "really" going to be gone? I don't think so. You might not be able to buy a new one, but there will be many examples with all ranges of miles driven, available for decades.

    It will be interesting to see how much money they will sell for. I’d like to get another one in a couple years and give the current one to my kids. I do prefer to buy new though and not get stuck with other people’s problems.

    I suspect that people who can afford the 2025 will get sucked in by the new features, even if they have a fairly new 2024. Yes, it will be interesting to see what the sales value of a 2024 will be after the 2025 rollout.

    Nope. Could have dropped cash for a LC250 or the 6th gen when it drops, still bought a 2024. If I were to have it any other way, it would only be removing TSS and BSM and it having a keyed ignition. You can fucking bury me in this thing and the only thing that would make me sell is a cherry low mileage LC80 or something imported.

    People who buy for that off-roader image will buy the 6th gen. People who understand what the 5th gen is about will not.

    A lot depends on parts availability. By the time my 4th gen Nova needed lots of repairs (12 years old, 8 years after generation change), I had to do a lot of junkyard harvesting. It's no fun getting leaf springs and control arms off a 10-year old car in the junkyard.

    There's quite a few 5th gen owners who would take issue with that gentleman's opinion of the paint quality. The rest of what he says most would agree with.

    Up here in the northeast rust starts to take its toll on small parts like brake, transmission and steering lines after 10-15 years. It can get to be a never ending repair job. If you want to get to high mileage it’s best to do it quickly.

    I don’t think they will hold some special value but I expect used ones to be only a few thousand less than new ones like previous Toyota trucks.

    just like the fj cruiser trail teams editions, I think low mileage “special” colors (army green, cavalry blue, cement etc) will command a premium for price

    Yeah, it's a chore. I'm in NJ and I've kept every car I've owned until I couldn't keep it going at reasonable cost. I gave my mom an Outback that I put 300k miles on. I put 243k miles on its replacement (a 2010), but I don't plan to keep that one much longer.

    One-at-this-price stripper. Bought new 34 yrs ago, a $13K leftover. Added Detroit TruTrac, 1”rear spring spacer and “pinstripes”… Factory AC kit and roof rack bought at dealer cost at time of purchase, still blows ice cold 32yrs later. 2022 AG ORP all stock.
    I remember my parent’s vehicles turning into rust buckets, I saw some really nice cars just destroyed. I grew up in upstate NY and left after college to CA, then NV…….at 69yrs old now, sometimes I take for granted that my trusty 1990 4R with 240k miles is completely rust free…. dents, scratches and sun beat…. yes, but no rust.

    Depends on the location. NYC/NJ barely have any snow so no reason to salt the roads. Upstate NY or MA is a different animal. I have a buddy who has a daily driver Jeep from 1992 in Pittsburgh and he just treats it with fluid film once a year or two plus cleans the frame with water hose as soon as it’s above freezing.

    Yep, back in the day I lived in Syracuse for 5 years where they used sand and salt on the roads. Destroyed my vehicles. At some point later better steel was used and decreased corrosion.

    Same. Here in AZ I kinda forget about rust and potholes and black ice and... Also don't have to make backup plans "in case it rains".

    I've seen a few references to lack of parts availability on this site but I have not really experienced it myself. I just sold my '98 in the past year or so and at 24-25 years old had no real problems getting parts. Same for my first gen when it was 25+ years old.

    My 2nd gen is really a 1st gen in disguise so aftermarket parts are plentiful. Except for coils rather than leaves in back it is a 1st gen driveline. My son wants to have twin sticks/duel xfer cases when he inherits it. For now just the TruTrac is sufficient.

    Good point; I think that states the obvious.

    It’s the verified & now common knowledge that you could roll past 200k mi if you wanted to that drives new 4R sales. Which keeps our resale values sky high even after the 3rd & 4th owners.

    Time will tell if the new turbo trucks can uphold that reputation the next 15 years.
