Whatsup guys. I’m a tundra member and the gf is looking at new newish 4runners. Wondering what the big differences were between a limited. Nightshade edition. And off-road. What to look for. I know the salesmen don’t always know/tell you everything. Any input is appreciated. She isn’t going to be hitting any trails hard and likes creature comforts. Also what’s the difference between 2019 and 2020. Is it just apple CarPlay and push start?

    Welcome to the forum!

It sounds like you've done some research already. If you're looking at creature comforts and have no intention of off-roading, definitely get the Limited or Nightshade. These trims are plenty capable of off-road travel as well, but come with the most comfortable options.

I'm not aware of the exact differences between the Limited and Nightshade, but I would bet they're mostly cosmetic. You can compare side by side on the Toyota Website to check the exact differences.

Aside from this, if you don't intend to do any off-roading at all, a Highlander might be worth a look as well. But, if you still prefer the 4runner, they're excellent vehicles. They're a little primitive compared to the rest of the mid-size SUV market, but that seems to be why most of us love them so much.:)

also Does the limited come with a locker or the same setup as a tundra. I like to know a little before I talk to the dealer. I know the off-road does

No locker on the limited. You shouldn't need the locker unless you're going through some really nasty stuff.

Yeah I haven’t gotten stuck in my tundra yet and 4Runner has way better weight ratio. Just curious. Thanks for the answers ! I realizeD a while ago that you guys have way more useful input than dealers or fb

    No problem!

True! But, Toyota.com is the best place for info. I think you can download a brochure, in addition to browsing the website. It's good for checking specs, and knowing you're getting good information.

Good luck with your purchase! Post pictures once you get one.:)

Nightshade is a limited.....just a blacked out one.
The 2020 4runners all have Toyota safety sense, (radar cruise control, lane departure warning, emergency braking, pedestrian detection)
&, a bigger touchscreen(NO CD player), android auto, alexa, bluetooth,GPS mapping, apple carplay, sirius sattelite radio etc.

I’m not a big fan of awd, personally. I like to decide when to use 4x4, and a locker is pretty good insurance. But does your GF care? Probably not. But if you ever borrow the 4 Runner, it might be cool to have!

When I got my 4Runner I was looking really hard at the night shades. If they would have had one at the dealer in MGM then I would have probably gotten it. (But then couldn’t pass up the Pro).

The AWD on the Limited / night shade is a really nice system. Big bonus if you live in a region that sees a lot of snow and ice.

A number of additional creature comforts compared to the Off-road premium or SR5 Premiums parking sensors, cooled seats ,better leather seats, premium JBL stereo, and factory remote start. I believe those are the main ones.

100% get the 2020 compared to the 2019. Toyota Safety Sense, Proximity entry, push button start, and CarPlay are all things that she will use and appreciate every time she uses the rig. It also future proofs the rig a bit, even for a Toyota truck (which you are familiar with their archaic tech in your tundra).
