I own a 1994 hilux 4x4 that has frame damage. I purchased a 2005 Toyota hilux surf that after an encounter with a large pothole tore a portion of the drivers frame loose so it now need two caps installed to repair. My coworker has a friend selling a 1999 hilux surf. Question is, does a 1999 accept newer generation parts such as motor, transmission, exhaust interchangeability? Or are they fairly incompatible? The price won’t be fun to take the hit on the loan but I need a running vehicle.

A 1994 will take some parts from 1999, the motor is a fairly popular swap. I'm not sure about the 1999 taking 2005 parts, but the motor wont be interchangeable without some serious work. After 3rd gen 4runners, the new engines went to a full drive by wire system. So people stopped bothering to swap engines into their older 4runners from new generations like we saw with the 1st and 2nd gens. It can be done, but it'd be a lot harder.

The exhaust system is routed to match a certain engine. So if you cant get the engine from a 2005 to swap, then the exhaust system is likely out of the question. The exhaust system largest feature is a bend in it to clear the rear axle, so if the axles are spaced a different distance apart then the bend wont be in the correct part.

    No idea about the transmission.

Using your 1999 to fix your 1994 or vise versa is more likely to work. The 4th generation 4runner was a huge departure from the older generations.
