2002 4Runner SR5 four-wheel drive

My truck is stuck in reverse so it won't start the key turns on all the way and the shifter stick slides fluidly no click into any gear it just slides back and forth so I can't start the engine it's stuck like I said I know it's something to do with the linkage but I have no idea where to start any help would be greatly appreciated
