Just purchased a 2012 4Runner SR5 with 169,000 miles and has lived its whole life in California. I will be taking this vechicle to my place in the Idaho panhandle where I will not be able to do major maintenance easily. Question is with that mileage should I replace the fuel pump and water pump as preventative maintenance? Also, any other items I should address. Thanks Mark

    Oooh look, another mod.....
Most fuel pumps can last on average for 100k - 200k miles. Some last longer, some last less....depending on a few variables like driving habits and maintenance. If the vehicle was well maintained. I wouldn't touch it.

Here's a link to a thread that another user posted with suggested maintenance guidelines:

    https://www.4runners.com/threads/5th-gen-maintenance-maps-torque-specs-and-part-numbers.31033/

In the end, it's your truck and your money. If replacing it early gives you peace of mind....go for it.

I guess the question would be "do you have reason to suspect failure in the near future?" Did you do a pre-purchase inspection? If I were in your shoes I would service all of the fluids, inspect everything for leaks, cracks, or anything remotely questionable. Fuel pump and water pump aren't really items I've heard that fail. At any mileage. I'm pushing 200K on my 2011 and haven't even considered those items. But as @Borracho Loco said, if it gives you peace of mind and makes you feel better, go for it. One thing: DO NOT use anything but OEM for these parts! There's a reason they last.

I understand the waterpump but why the fuel pump? All i will recommend is go with OEM for both - ESPECIALLY the fuel pump

I would leave it until it's needed.

I see no reason to replace the fuel pump unless it is failing.

...and I'm one who is a stickler for preventative maintenance.

I think what we're all saying OP is this:

A fuel pump and your 4Runner is like your wife. You don't replace her unless you absolutely have to, because it's time consuming and can be expensive. If you service her regularly, she'll last a long time.

Thanks for all the replies. I had a fuel pump fail on me last summer on a logging road on a Sunday. Long walk to cell service. This was a 1992 Bronco with 165k miles. Got me thinking of staying ahead. I do not worry much about it on my airplane as it has a backup pump. I backcountry alot. In the old days a spare mechanical pump was easy to swap out and off you go. Electronics can sink your day.

Totally get it. Only use OEM. But yeah, I couldn’t imagine what that felt like especially with no cell signal.

I'd certainly like to believe a 5th gen 4Runner would be more reliable than a '92 Bronco at the 165k+ mileage mark. If I thought I needed to carry spare parts that matched all the ones on past vehicles that went out on me at one time or another, I'd need to pull a trailer to carry them all. Or tow a backup vehicle.

More damage will be done by the person swapping a working fuel pump and water pump, than just leaving the originals in and letting them be. Enjoy your trip.
