Im embarrassed to admit that I’m having difficulty waiting to change to wider tires. The original 245/60/20’s are skinny but loaded with tread. Prob lucky to get $50.00 per tire with 4,300 mi on them if I were to trade them in now for say 275’s. To get money’s worth out of them will prob take another 20K miles the way I drive, year and one half maybe?

    you”only live once”, you say?
    Definitely a “first world” conundrum
I should hang my head low in shame:(

I feel your pain. The thing is - I know if went in and got a new set of AT tires tomorrow, I’d drive away feeling guilty about the wasted life left in the original tires for about a half hour, and then I’d never think of them again. Getting to the front door of the tire shop is the hardest part.

I'm a new member of the "you only live once" club now, especially since I already lived at least 2/3 of it. I picked this vehicle to make the most of the remainder while I still can. Waiting two years to wear out the factory tires doesn't make sense for me. Even my wife agrees.

I took my brand new 4runner with 600 miles on it and replaced the stock tires with 285/70r17s. I felt zero remorse about it.

I held on to my OE tires for 40K, and then changed. My inherent cheapness kept me in them, and they were fine on the highway. I justified dumping them at 40K because I told my wife that even though tread was in safe zone, we could hydroplane…. Ironically, I ended out getting skinnier tires than OE. 255/75 R17. KO 2’s. They are bigger in diameter and actually look pretty good. Off road performance has been great and fuel economy did not suffer.

I planned the change to AT's as part of my purchase cost, so with 200 miles on it I swapped them out. Dealer wouldn't buy my tires for a credit, so I bagged them, put them in the shed, and put them on Craig's list. It took 6 months but I finally sold them for 400 bucks, which I was happy with. Anyway, 10 months into ownership, I don't sit thinking about the money I spent on the 4R or the tires.

Stock Dunlops were gone on the second day. I just chalked it up to the price of entry and never looked back

You could be like me with a few over 100,000 miles and been through four sets of tires because I can't settle on one

How is your personal experience with rain highway stopping on other than stock: better or not?

Maybe buy and store some 17” take off wheels…..but….I….can’t…..quite….pull the trigger…..to replace good tires until at least 50% gone. Just another victim of no money upbringing.

for the trails that I do so far, the nitto terra that came with the pro are good enough.
I will definitely get something else once they reach the end of their life (possibly toyo AT3 or Falken wildpeak)
I dont know yet if I want to go bigger (285/70/17) or stay with the 265s.

IF the truck came with highway tires, I would have changed them on day 1 though

They way I slow play this is determined on how much I NEED it. If it will be a definitive improvement, Do it and move forward, reveling in your awesome decision.

Usually can get a little bit of cash on your takes offs, depending on mileage.

I only got 12,000 miles out of the factory Dunlaps. Living in the mountains and rough asphalt took its toll quickly.

My 2017 SR-5 has 32,000 miles on it, and I’m on my 4th set of tires.

As soon as my dealer notifies me that my truck has arrived, I'll be off to Sam's club to order a set of Wildpeaks. I probably won't have the stock tires on for 100 miles, before they're changed out.

I was of the same mindset - gonna keep those "free oem tires" 'til they're bald, for once. My plan took a hit when one got ruined by a run over tool in the road. One Dunlop replacement was close to $300 with mounting and balancing, 4 new Falkens were $550 with trade in of the Dunlops. No brainer.
