I test drove both a standard 4-runner TRD and a TRD Pro. Loved the feel of the FOX suspension, but otherwise didn't see any big advantage to the much more expensive PRO. I dive off-road and rough roads to get to good flyfishing & geology sites. Can I add a better (FOX?) suspension system to a regular TRD? Should I? I'd a appreciate and inch or so lift if it meant better clearance.

Welcome. Unless you're buying a TRD Pro for the color, I'd just get a different trim and look at aftermarket suspension options. Search the forums as there are so many different options.

Absolutely! The Pro Fox suspension is good, but there are much better options available through the aftermarket.

Or you could add the Pro suspension after the fact, you can buy it new or check classifieds for a Pro owner that is upgrading. I've seen them on eBay in the 1500 dollar range.

Thanks for advice. I think I will just look at the regular TRD models for now and plan of changing suspension later.

x2 for aftermarket Fox. We've had some great results putting some tuned Fox shocks on brand new 4Runners. Increased stance, ride quality and control were some of the major changes.

To me TRD Pro Fox suspension is like very basic suspension. For the comfort, no lift I see no point spending money on that. Reasonably priced Ironman FCP suspension is much better than TRD Pro Fox to my taste. Suspension like ELKA 2.5DC is by far better than TRD Pro fox. I bet other aftermarket suspension like Kings, OME BP51, Fox2.5DC, Dobinson MRR, etc would be much better options, but no personal experience.

Also the skinny wheels might not help you if you are going for bigger tires in future vs TRD Offroad wheels are with in requirements for 33in / 34in (285/75/R17) tires.

I'm not a fan of ice cream truck / Prius colors on TRD Pros either. But I do like the manly/guys colors like Army Green from "special colors".

But TRD Pros have little things that might be interest to some. Like JBL sound system, automatic headlights, remote start, etc..

My neighbor is looking to upgrade to ELKA 2.5dc as recommended by a mechanic. Due for new tires and brake pads so he ordered a set of nittos from 4Wheelonline and they will get installed this week.

As a Pro owner, and friends with SR5's, etc., like said above, unless you need the special color, save your money and time and just get any other trim level. The Pro just doesn't offer the premium they charge. Besides the Limited you can throw whatever (better) aftermarket suspension for less than the upchage for the Pro.

Mine has been paid off for a while, but if I could go back before I bought it, I would have bought the SR5 Premium 4x4 knowing what I know now.
