Hello 4Runner community. My family is relocating to Africa for a couple years, and I'll be buying a 2007 Toyota 4Runner Limited, 4x4, V6, with 135,000, from an American couple who brought it over with them two years ago. The environment is very hot (highs of 108-112), mostly dry, with fine sand/dust/dirt. Arizona is the closest environment I can think of here. I'm paying $10,800 which isn't too bad for that part of the world. I saw a 2012 Nissan Rogue going for $12,000.

-What do I need to be aware of (primarily potential problems) when owning this year, make and model?
-Are there any proprietary sockets, bits, or tools I would need for simple maintenance.
-Are there any maintenance how to tutorials on here or other sites?

I had a friend check it out and he said it's in pretty good shape, especially for that environment. Although he said the steering is sluggish/firm compared to his Land Cruiser. Thanks everyone.

    OE

    Welcome!

I would keep fluids and air filters clean, lubricate regularly

Be sure you have the radiator checked out before you leave. Make sure there is no rust in the radiator and it might be good to have it flushed.
Make sure all rubber hoses and lines are in good shape.
Ensure there are no fluid or oil leaks.
Make sure the brake rotors and pads are not near the end of their life.
Change the air filter and take another one with you. Change the cabin filter as well.
Change engine oil, the oil in the differentials.
    Change the transmission fluid.
Inspect all belts for wear and replace as needed.
Be sure the tires are not near their end of life.
Make sure all lights, blinkers, etc are working.
Make sure all the ball joints and wheel bearings are in good shape.
Have the frame inspected for rust.

I am certain this list is not exhaustive, and other members will be quick to mention any items I may have missed.

If any of the items I have mentioned have records of being done recently then you can skip that item.
I personally would not take vehicle to Africa, without having it fully serviced and ready for the harsh environment. Especially a vehicle that is 16 years old.

Thanks, Cowboy. They do have some decent mechanics there, and Toyotas are primarily what they work on. Tires are good (comes with two extras), lights have all been checked. Air filters need to be changed monthly there, but I didn't think of the air cabin filter. Brakes were just serviced with new pads. I doubt the radiator has been checked. I'll ask about that.
