I recently had a shop install 17x8.5 method 316s and stock size 265/70/17 falken wildpeaks at3w. I do not have a lift. Ride is great except...

I have the dreaded steering wheel shake/shimmy driving on the highway anywhere between 55mph - 62 mph. Steering also feels less responsive in this range. I know the shop I went to has an electronic type balancer, but pretty sure it's not a roadforce balancer.

Can anyone offer any advice on best ways to fix this issue or those who have also experience this? Should I take it back to the original shop that mounted/balanced the wheels and tires? Or take it to a different shop who has a road force balancer and pay for the re-balancing? Would it be recommended to also get an alignment at all? Thanks for any help in advance.

Road force balance will probably be the best bet for you and more specifically, you'll want to look for a place with a Hunter machine.

The following steps below are from another poster on another forum. Maybe it will help your situation or give you some ideas how to deal this issue best.

    1. Road force. Most know this, but make sure the shop checks it.
    2. Adapter plate. Make sure the shop uses these instead of the cone adapters. This is important for Toyotas

Now for the most influential factor in my case:
    3. On some Hunter machines, there's a program that's called "Smart Weight". If you're struggling with balance, ask the shop to turn it off. . For me, the above points 1 and 2 were perfect but the steering still shook. Everything, even the alignment was checked and yet I had shimmies and shakes.

Turning off "Smart Weight" and rebalancing resolved the issue immediately and seemingly consistently (twice now on different tires and thousands of miles apart). I'm not an expert on what that program does, but apparently it's counter-productive for balancing in some cases, at least.

My work was done as Discount Tire, so likely the DT around you will have the same Hunter machines.

mine does the exact same thing yours does. I actually switched my falkens out for Goodyear’s and now the Goodyear’s are shimmy between 60-70mph. I just don’t get it. I’m on my second set of tires and probably 6th balance and still having vibration issues. Something is up with these new 5th gens I’m tellin ya!

Air down to 32. Drive it. It will diminish after a while. It’s the nature of the beast.

I just had Penn Toyota (they have a Hunter Elite) look at my balance and they made their adjustments and the truck feels like new again. No more shakes.
My tires were originally installed at the Mavis location, and today before going to Penn, they admitted if Penn had the elite system to go there. So I did. Glad I did. By the way, if the tech doesn’t drive the truck after their adjustments, find someone who will.
