Falken Wildpeak A/T Tires - Pavement

    Hello All! I just joined the 4R team with a new to me ‘18 SR5 Premium. my first order of business is getting new tires for my rig. I plan on getting the Falken Wildpeak A/T tires, and my issue is that i don’t do a lot of off roading, most of my driving will be on pavement. I absolutely LOVE the Wildpeak look, but i am concerned that they will be too loud/ride harsh on the pavement. for those running A/T tires, could you provide some insight as to how they ride on the pavement ? thank you!

    I would be more concerned with the weight than the road manners, supposedly they're pretty good. The problem is these tires are super heavy for any given sign, which will negatively affect your performance.

    i appreciate the response! i was also looking at Ko2s but they only have E or C class load tires. i saw a post on here few days ago that the wild peaks might be better as they are rated as Standard Load, similar to the stock tires.

    I have Falken's. I bought them the same day that I bought my SloRunna. So I can't give you an honest assessment of what the stock tires sounded like compared to the Falkens. But the Falken's (this is just my opinion - please take it with a grain of salt) have minimal road noise.

    My rig is my daily driver and 95% of my driving is on highways/pavement. They (again, this is my opinion) ride smooth and don't sound loud at all. Others may disagree though. I think it's what you're willing to put up with or not put up with. I also set the tire pressure to 32PSI. I have had them lower and the road noise did get worse. I had the PSI set higher, and the ride seemed stiffer.

    I like mine. They're not much louder than the OEM tires and behave nicely on the road.

    What about the BFG Trail-Terrain? It splits the difference between an AT and an all-season.

    Yes, SL is definitely the way to go. I'm shopping tires myself, and it's kind of difficult finding the I want, in a certain size, and a certain load range haha. So many of them are only e-rated.

    There's a huge thread where someone was asking about an aggressive looking tire with good street manners, you should check that one out.

    These are great pictures that really illustrate how much bigger an aggressive all-terrain looks even in the stock size.

    Also, love that Barcelona red!

    Yeah, I forgot to mention that I stuck with the stock size when I bought the tires. It shows that you don't NEED 285's to look really aggressive, or even to be aggressive on the trails. The stock size will do just fine....and make a big impact.

    wow that is one sexy rig!!! that’s exactly the look i am going for, but my rig is white. how much of an effect do they have on MPGs? also sounds like there is some noise with them on the highway, but it’s not too obnoxiously loud right?

    i planned on getting the stock tire size as i think they just look absolutely great, and i don’t want to add a lift or spacers.

    Definitely! I went from the stock size Bridgestone dueler HT's to General Grabber ATX, and when I picked it up I had the check the sidewall because I thought they went up a size. Definitely fills the wheel wells out better.

    I'm lifting mine 2-in front, 1 in rear pretty soon and I'm thinking I might just stick with the stock size for that reason.

    Yeah, you'll get some noise. But then again, you'll get noise regardless. The SloRunna' is a noisy fucking truck. I've figured out how to hyper-mile my truck, so my MPG's probably weren't impacted at all. I drive 32miles (one way) to work each day, and I average 20.7 - 22MPG. I'm sure with the stock-street tires, I could have gotten another 1 or 1.5 miles more per gallon. But 20-ish MPG is really impressive when you think about it.

    It's a (almost) 5k pound truck, lifted and with almost 12 inches of ground clearance, on big ass (and heavy) off road tires.

    P.S. There is one draw back I have noticed: When I reverse and turn to the right, I hear some rubbing. It only occurs when I turn ALL THE WAY to the right, but still....it's rubbing. Just wanted you to know that.

    The Falken Wildpeak AT is actually a fairly mild tire that does nothing particular well, but is low priced and has good availability, so it's popular.

    If you want perspective on a loud tire, go take a ride in a vehicle with Interco TSL Bogger tires. The Falkens will be like a mouse by comparison. :laugh:

    Totally agree. My 1911 .45 sounds extremely quiet; when you compare it to a Howitzer.

    So what's the difference between these and the infamous BFG Rugged Trails that came stock on the 2nd gen Tacoma, which owners of those Tacos lovingly referred to as "Rugged Fails", and rid their trucks of them almost as fast as 4Runner owners ditch the Bridgestone Duellers & the Dunlops?

    I do not, I instead went for the Michelin Defender LTX - great highway tire with side of off-road chops but none of the look you're looking for. The Trail-Terrains were second in line though. I'd expect it to be in between an all-season and a dedicated AT in noise. I ran a directly-competing Wildpeak A/T Trails on a different vehicle and noticed a slight uptick in noise driving home from the tire shop but if I didn't care I don't think it will annoy you. I'd say it's your best bet if the look is non-negotiable.

    The Trail-Terrain is a relatively new tire competing with the Falken Wildpeak A/T Trail (and other light-AT tires) and aimed more at the crossover-that-leaves-pavement use case but comes in a 4Runner fitment. Tread looks quite different to me. The Rugged Trail was a little before my time so I can't speak to it directly.

    The Falkens don't make noise on the road and like other's have recommended, get the SL rated version.

    I will differ from others in this regard. I have SL load Falken Wildpeak AT3s in the stock size, and find them a bit too loud for my taste. I do love the look, and I don't find the ride to be too harsh, but they are a heavy tire, and I'm just not too fond of the somewhat increased road noise. They're not in the category of a Goodyear Duratracs, which are very loud, but are noisier than some IMO.

    I'm seriously considering going with a set of Michelin Defender LTX. I've never run Michelin tires before, and have heard only good things about them.

    In my case, my anecdote isn't quite applicable to a 4Runner shopper - A/T Trail is less aggressive than the AT3 and isn't available in the 4Runner's stock fitment. I just mentioned it since it's probably the closest not-quite-an-A/T competitor to the Trail-Terrain that I have experience with (came out in 2019 I think, the T-T in... 2021? Right after I bought the Wildpeaks for the Kia) and treated me well.

    I do recommend the Defenders though. (Haven't hit 5,000 miles on them however) I haven't had any complaints and they were fine on dirt, some rock but the usual mud limitations applied. Otherwise it's a painless tire. Does like to hang onto the occasional small pebble though.

    If I were to do it over, I'd look at the warehouse club version (if you have a membership): the X LT A/S and get them installed at Discount Tire or your shop of choice. (I'd do it at Costco but the tire center is usually slower and didn't realize I could just buy the tires and take to get the Discount Tire installation perks.)

    If you are around Denver CO I'd be happy to sell the Falken Wildpeak AT3W P285/70R17 tires on my non offroading Limited. I love the light weight Toyo Open Country AT3 285/70R17 on my TRD or even I would love to get Yokogama Geolanders or Cooper Discover AT4S for my Limited as its my wife's daily driver, not for offroading.

    Unpopular opinion but I am not a fan of the wildpeak AT3W in the snow, 275s in C-load. I feel they do no better than BFG AT or Duratracs in slick conditions, 32psi or 40psi.

    I will be going with Wrangler Territories next tire, other than holding on to rocks they are a good all around tire.

    I have 275/70r17 AT3w, load range C. They ride pretty good. For you, I would get stock sized sl to save on ride quality and weight

    I put stock size Toyo Open Country AT3's on my 4R in November and I have been really pleased with them. Quiet and fine on wet roads. Very little snow on the roads this year here in MD. Yet to test them off road - very few places to do that here in MD. If I lived out west where the opportunities to go 4wheeling were readily available I would strongly consider a E rated tire.

    I HAVE NOT ran them, but I found the Falken Rubitrek last month and am very intrigued. Seems like it started out almost as a Sams/Walmart exclusive but I've seen them online at simpletire and someone here said they were able to order through their Discount Tire but I havent confirmed personally yet. Slightly different tread pattern to be quieter. Seems like it slots between most stock tires and more aggressive ATs. I really like the Wildpeaks I've seen in person but they're so damn heavy. Stock size Rubitreks are only 46.5lbs and sub $200 a tire most places.

    I too like the looks of those. Itll probably be between Rubitrek, Toyo and MT Baja AT when I buy new tires in the fall.

    Not loud, not harsh. Not precise or nearly as smooth as a good road radial either. If you drive roads/highways 99% of the time I would shy away from an AT tire if you came from sedans or vehicles with lower profile radials. Sloppy is too harsh a word, but it's night and day going from my Limited's P245/60R20 radials to P265/70/17 Wildpeaks in terms of feel and driving experience.

    Hello Gary, I put Michelin Defender LTX tires on my 2015 Tacoma this past summer. I am very happy with these tires, especially in the rain. These tires are magnificent in the rain. I have not driven with them in the snow, and probably won't as my Tacoma is not 4 wheel drive.
