    Hi Folks,
    I've got a 2004 4WD 4runner, 4.0L V6. Will a 2WD 4.0L V6 engine be compatible? And allow 4WD to still work? Or should I try and find a used 4WD engine.

    Just beginning!
The engines have nothing to do with 2WD and 4WD... just stay with the 4.0L V6, try to obtain a "later run" (06-09) to avoid the head gasket issues.

There will be very Minor Difference in a couple of Vacuum lines with the 06 to 09 engines but just look at your original setup and plug off the ones that you do not need.
