Motor sounds like it is making a kind of knocking noise when it starts but goes away. I haven’t lost power when accelerating, and for the life of me can’t figure it out. It isn’t the normal sounding loud fan noise like usual.

    Oooh look, another mod.....

If you could post a video so we can hear the sound it's making, that would help.

    Welcome to the forum.

I am assuming you have verified the correct oil level in your 4runner and haven't had any major repairs recently performed.

Just trying to help narrow down what issue, if any, you may have.

I wouldn't worry, a properly running 4.0 sounds broken. For months I was convinced a valve or something was about to shoot through the hood, but so far so good at 164k and counting.

These are just loud, rattly engines.

If you aren't able to figure out what's going on you should consider a visit to the dealership. You shouldn't be hearing a knocking noise when it starts up.I would caution against driving it until you've determined what the cause is in the event that it leads to possible serious damage.
