I have an '05 that has been stored for a couple of years +. I assume it needs a new battery. I have to travel to retrieve it, so I am wondering what else might cause the engine to kill when a jumper box is removed? I don't want to get there with a battery and have it kill. I really think it needs a new battery! Thank you!!

Easiest thing to do is to buy a new battery. My guess is your alternator is probably dead if it will not stay running without a battery attached.

Good luck, sounds like an adventure awaits.

I had an older 4 runner in the 90’s that had the same problem. It was the alternator.

I would also look over everything that's rubber on a vehicle that is that age and has been sitting for 2 years. Hoses could become excessively stiff and develop cracks. Tires can dry rot and develop tiny cracks. Even if they still have a lot of remaining tread, if they're over 7 or 8 years old they should probably be replaced. You can find the month and year of manufacture on the side of the tire. I'd probably also check the belts.

Maybe considering towing it home to work on some of these things. Borrow/rent a truck and a Uhaul trailer and get it home safely and then repair as needed. Tires and brakes should always be in tip top shape, IMO. I prematurely spend on tires and brakes all the time just to be safe.

All I get is this little box?!
Alternator is easy to test. When it’s working if you put a flat head to the screw holding the pully it will be magnetic. If it doesn’t catch the screwdriver it needs a new alternator.
