2019 SR5 was used around 2pm today. At 7:30pm, I went into the garage and it sounded like a small motor was running in the back of vehicle.

I started the vehicle, and then shut it off and the sound was no longer there.

Any ideas what this sound might be and if it is normal? The fuel pump might be back there?

Someone mentioned on this thread that the fuel pump runs for a bit after the vehicle is turned off:

varies by manufacturer, but its normal

"You may hear a noise from under the vehicle approximately 5 to 10 hours after the ignition switch is turned to the “LOCK”/“OFF” position. However, this does not indicate a malfunction. This noise is caused by the operation of the fuel evaporation leakage checking system and the operation is normal. The noise will stop after approximately 15 minutes"

Your link is not working for me.

The fuel pump is in the gas tank, that being said the Evaporative Emission System does perform a test at some point after the vehicle has been shut off to test the system for leaks, it could very well be this test you heard being performed, but I'm not sure if the test makes any sounds or how long after shutdown the test is done and how long it takes for the test to complete.

Normal. Mine does it usually 5 hours after, and it’s pretty loud. I had an 06 Corolla that did it too, and I probably had it for 10 years before I ever heard it do that.

This is normal operation of evaporitive emissions system and documented in the owners manual.
    Nothing to worry about.

It's pretty noticeable in all the Toyota and Honda products we've ever had. My wife's Subie is slightly quieter and seems to be longer after shut down before it starts.

Phew -- thanks for all the information! Guess I need to spend more time in the owner's manual.
