Hello All, I'm building a single drawer system. I am currently using about 1/2 inch ACX Plywood. 36in depth x 10 inch Height x 22.5 width. For those who have built their own or bought their own, is there anything you would do differently, add, remove? I also cant decide if I want to add 250lb or 500lb weight limit Slides. Your opinions and constructive criticism are all welcome.

@Shnook718 Take a look at Ironman4x4america.com for their specs. It sounds a lot like what you're building. I bought their dual drawer system for a vehicle I've since sold. It's really nice. I have it for sale if you're interested in something larger than your build. I'm not sure you could build something similar for less than what I'm asking, but it's about twice the size of what you're building.

I am building a 3 drawer system currently. I am using edit:23/32 wood (poor man's 3/4") for the box and all drawer sides. There will be one large main drawer that will be using 500lbs slides and edit:23/32 bottom on the drawer. My other two drawers will be edit:23/32 on the sides and a 1/2 bottom. There is a fridge slide/drawer and another drawer under it using 250lbs sliders. I do a butt/dado like joint on everything and don't use nails.

If you have 250lbs or so of gear in your drawer then go with the 500lbs sliders and bump up to edit:23/32 or 3/4 wood. I used 1/2" wood for a ~75lbs fridge slide and 250lbs sliders. The sliders held up fine but the 1/2" was going to be an issue down the road, it made uncomfortable noises on washboards.

    The design-ish.

    Why isn't 32/64" equal to 1/2"

I've built them out of wood and I've built them out of extrusion.. I'd take extrusion any time. so much easier to work with and can always add on to it later.

I found the aluminum extrusion much easier to construct drawers with, and you can always add to it later if you want to add the second drawer. try the TNutz website they appear to have fairly decent pricing.

Yes, it is, but items created by extrusion are also commonly called extrusions.

I've always called it aluminum profile, or just profile, but that's just another non-descript name.

Assuming we're talking about the same stuff: the extruded aluminum would just make the frame, right? What do you use for the panels? (do you have solid panels?)

I constructed the frame and pull out table from extrusion. The top and drawers I made from wood. I'd post pics if this site actually hosted them. I didn't add panels to the side because in my case it doesn't need them, the drawers fill the frame opening. If I was to do a single drawer then I'd just slide in 1/4 paneling in the frame.

For slides, most are rated by use so a 500lb slide is for something you use in your garage while it's only like 350lb in a van or 250lb off-road. Go big or go home and get the bigger margin of safety because unless you're shelling out for Accuride, you're probably getting the same Chinese slide.

I don't mind the 1-drawer setup except that you aren't going to have good tie-downs and you aren't going to have a level floor. Might consider a full-width baseplate so you can get access to all 4 tie-down points.

Damn you now I am reconsidering my entire design. I've never worked with it before but have been intrigued. Any special tools required or just order your parts then Lego it together?

Looks like this site has a free designer to use after acount creation https://vention.io

If you pay the machining costs, you can literally have it delivered ready to assemble with an allen key. If you want to save a significant amount of money, you'll at the very least need a thread tap for the ends and a drill/jig if you want to do hidden fasteners.

I started by drawing the design, then getting the measurements. You can order it cut to size or cut it yourself. I chose to cut it myself. Aside from a blade to cut the aluminum I ordered a 1/4-20 tap to thread the end pieces that I used corner connectors on.

I usually hate 80/20 builds that most do but that is a very clean looking setup. Any time I've done them I've paneled with 1/8" ply but I think yours is one of the first I like that leaves it exposed.

I actually got material to panel the sides but when I started to think about it there really wasn't any need.. its enclosed by the vehicle and the drawers are tall enough. I did panel the front though, mainly so I could attach other items if needed in the future.

Dust any concern with going paneless?

@trezpass go a pic of the side view, curious to see how the slide rails mount to the frame, are their additional vertical supports is my question. Or do they just screw to the front and rear vertical box supports?

I usually do the 2 slot, 2 smooth for the front pieces when I build and do full drawer faces with seals on the back... For the rest, tucking round neoprene in the slot around the hardware before paneling basically makes them dust-proof.

Dust isn't any more a concern than anything else inside the vehicle. the slides are mounted on rails that run down the sides of the frame: I'll send a pic in a bit when I get out to my phone. what I liked about using the extrusion is the amount of adjustability you have with mounting the slides... need to move them up or down or forward/ backwards its no problem.

I looked at that, I actually liked the look of the slotted for some reason.. I'd definitely look at sealing it up if it was in a truck bed but didn't feel it needed it in my application.

Yeah I've just done like 8 pickup and Jeep builds where weather and dust were an issue. The full drawers up front is just my aesthetic preference in any case but they're pretty much mandatory for sealing.
