I don't have a dog, but I've got Weathertech. Protects and grippy enough that stuff doesn't slide around.

I bought a seat protector and used it to line the trunk. Attaches to the headrest. If anything it's too big but I'm ok with that.

I have the Canvasback liners, followed by the OEM all weather liner, followed by a 5” foam mattress. Pups are super comfy and the 4Runner is protected.

Since we leave the backseats down, we have a mix of one of those back seat hammocks, spread out, a piece of fake grass over the OEM cargo mat.

He is such a good-looking boy! A little secret with 4Runners and dogs is to completely unbolt the second-row seat bottoms. Once the bottoms are out, you can still slide your front seats back and recline. With the seat bottoms in, it doesn't allow you to recline.

    Oooh look, another mod.....
Wrap your dog with bubble wrap. It will pull double duty:

    1) No pet hair will fall off of them into your 4Runner.
    2) If/When they fall, the bubble wrap will protect them and they won't get hurt!

Thanks. Good tip. Does removing the seat bottoms affect the support of the seat backs while they're down? e.g. I can't remember if they rest on any part of the seat bottoms.

Nope, the seat backs sit nicely on the surfaces creating by tipping the bottoms up, regardless of whether the bottoms are removed. It's my standard road trip configuration.

I’ve had the bottoms out on the last 2 4Runner and the current one without any issues. The huskies lay on the seat backs (one is 76lbs and the other is 72lbs) and I haven’t experienced any issues. We also sleep back there on occasion. I’ll try and get a picture in the next day or so.

Did you find a 5” foam mattress they sell that fits the cargo area perfectly, have one custom made, or DIY made? Or is it not so snug of a fit?

I’m trying to find one that fits the area snugly without costing $200.

We have a few mattress manufacturers here in Utah and had one of them cut it from their scrap, leftover material. It cost me a favor request from a friend who does packaging for them. I just gave them the rectangular dimensions. It's a pretty snug fit, purposefully planned with the dimensions. It squeezes tight between the wheel wells. I'm sure that a full-size mattress has the same dimensions, but I'm too cheap to spend the money. I also have the rear seat bottoms removed, which adds about 6-8 additional inches of room.

Just wanted to share... saw a guy replaced the carpet in his cargo area and used what he called Marine Vinyl. I think it looks great and very dog-friendly. Saw this in a 4Runner FB group.

We have it in our 2018 for our boxer and Boston terrier and it works great. I’ll try to get some pics for you.
