Dog Hair Proofing 4Runner Suggestions

Question: Bought a 2020 4Runner and have two dogs that ride everywhere with me. Spent the first month and had to do a full reset on my 4Runner, interior clean, vacuum, and shampoo. Sooo much time cleaning dog hair over the weekend. It’s insane how much they shed.

Realize I need a some protection on the floor and back of the seats. I want to buy a custom cargo liner or mat that will protect from my two labs. There’s a few options out there, does anyone have a suggestion of the best custom cargo liner for the 4Runner?

 

I have two large labs and they wont allow me to leave without taking them I previously had the Grand Cherokee, owned two different custom cargo liners and then bought a 4runner two years ago and bought a couple for this vehicle.

I find they’re the only company that makes them specifically for dogs, material that matches the interior (it’s made with a double sided vinyl but looks like leather), and covers the 4Runner floor and back of each seat so you can fold those up or down. I ride with those seats down so my dogs have access of the entire length.

I’ve tried the custom blanket and two other custom cargo liners. The material for the others just rips with big dogs so Ruff Rugs double sided vinyl made sense.

You’re always going to be dealing with dog hair but essentially this liner is there to prevent the dog hair and spills sticking to the carpet. Every week, I just wipe the entire thing down with a wet cloth. My 4runner smells A LOT better now

They make a variety of car covers for the backseat and the cargo area, I think WeatherTech makes one for the entire backseat. I’ve just given up. There’s really nothing that will keep the smell, hair, and claws from tearing up your car.

 

We have a 75 pound white pit bull that absolutely loves to go everywhere in our T4R with black carpeting. Fortunately, I detail cars for a living and can address the cleanup part of your concerns. Get yourself one of the many rubber dog hair removal brushes that are available through most detailing supply houses and even Amazon. Here's the one I use and highly recommend:

Although it won't keep your dogs from shedding or the hair getting everywhere in your truck, it will make cleanup much easier. I vacuum our truck 2-3 times a week and this brush has really saved me a ton of time.

I use Canvasback in all my vehicles. It has never let down, but my dog doesn't go in the back much. I use towels for the rear seat since thats where he rides. I have an Australian Shepherd and they shed a ton. I feed him a raw food diet and he sheds less than any dog I've ever had and I know its the diet.

 

It’s cloth underneath so the material ends up being really thick. I find it’s really smart how they set it up and perfect for dogs. 1/4” rubber truck bed mat cut to fit, pull it out, squirt it off, put it back in.

 

Best thing is to make sure you comb and de-shed before every trip. I did it as a habit with my dogs in the past and it made cleaning my truck a ton easier. Regular grooming makes a massive difference .

Also, SlvrSlug's mats on the rear help a ton so that you minimize hair/fur on the rear seats. I would put a sleeping mat down to give them something soft to lay on.

 

Buy a poodle.

 

I use cheap Amazon dog seat protector things and wasn't hard to clean. I just vacuum..

Honestly, have found the material for the Ruff Rugs to be the most durable. Had other custom liners but ripped under the dog's nails.

No, I tuck it in and drape it over. Mostly they lay on it.
