Do you think Toyota will ever equip a 4runner with a manual?

Obviously I am talking about here in the USA. There are no modern SUVs with a standard transmission (except the jeep wrangler) and with the new ford bronco making waves in this area maybe it will motivate Toyota to cater to the same purist/enthusiast demands that ford satisfied.

I don't know how many people will actually buy the ford bronco with the standard, I hope a lot will, but they clearly felt it necessary to make it available. Its been 20 long years since the 4runner last came with a manual option and I want to see it again before I die.

No, manuals are a dying breed. I suspect in the future the only thing they will be featured on is the cheapest economy cars.

Na, they will die out on economy cars and then like everything old fashioned (plays, the opera, records, horse racing, mechanical watches) the upper class will take appreciation to them and save it from obscurity.

The FJ Cruiser was offered here with a manual tranny, and you can still buy a 2020 FJ Cruiser with a manual in UAE too:

I don’t see it happening just like the new corvette. The new C8 is only automatic because it’s cheaper to only do one and then to have both to build. That’s why I Bought a new 19 Z06 M7. They will hold there value well down the road plus not my only reason.

Also have to think warranty on parts. Week transmissions, clutches, throw out bearing, slave cylinder( because it needs to be hydraulic...) And the fact most people don't know how to use a clutch, forget about using it correctly. Keep in mind the New Bronco only gets the manual trans with the 4 cylinder engine.

And this is why we have a Gen 2 BECAUSE of its factory 5 speed and why we went to such great lengths to bring her back to perfect. She is a unicorn. Most of our fleet are manuals and most are older and thats the way we like it. I enjoy driving my car. Thank you for your driving passion. I REALLY wish they would bring them back but highly doubt they will. The US market is lazy and spoiled. Sad.....but thrue.

I would love to have a manual anything, but at 6'6", my old knees can't handle stop and go traffic anymore, which unless you live in a rural area is a part of life now days. Trail rides would be tiresome also. The performance advantages of a manual are usually up for debate, especially on the technical trails. Back in the day I could short shift my vehicles, and with proper rpms, save a good bit of fuel. I almost talked myself into a 6 speed FJ a few years ago, until I looked at the rusted out frame and ran the other way. I heard you can't even get a 4 cyl manual Taco anymore, but I could be wrong on that one.

I'll hazard a guess that the new stripped down Land Cruiser will have the option.

Probably see a CVT before a manual in the 6th Gen

Hmm, I didn’t see any manuals, not that I could really get one, but I was dreaming for a minute.

If mine had a 6 speed manual, I’d probably declare it perfect. I don’t see any future 4Runner being offered with one, although it’s possible if they just dump the Tacoma drivetrain in the new 4Runner.

A manual clutch is a weak point in a drive train, which is why automatics get higher towing ratings. I like a manual transmission mostly for nostalgic reasons, and since I don’t drive in heavy traffic, would probably buy one. But they are inferior, mechanically speaking.

The third gen came with a manual option until 2000. In fact that is what I drive now. When I was test driving a second gen 4runner with a 5 speed the owner was in the process of saying "The thing about the first gear is its difficu..." and I already had the car moving. He didn't think someone under the age of 20 could drive a manual lol.

I love my manual transmission third gen 4runner which is why I don't see me ever buying a newer 4runner. Its a pain in the ass to wade into the used market of 20+ year old 4runners to find one with a standard transmission among the rusted out frames and shady characters that you come across on craigslist.

I had an 84' F250 351 with the Granny Gear 30 years ago and that truck would climb a tree and Tow anything. Now in a small pick up or SUV with a towing package that's underrated? Yea an automatic is better served. But a properly rated and adjusted clutch system is just as good imho. Not many people even know how to drive a standard anymore and most people want the convenience of an automatic, so in a passenger style truck or SUV they will be a thing of the past sooner than later. I don't think there are very many 26k GVW box trucks made with a manual anymore. I would like to see the maintenance and reliability numbers of those trucks compared to a solid manual of the past.

It’s not because it isn’t true it’s because it’s the only option to have that many gears in a highway tractor. Most ag tractors are hydraulic as are big rock trucks.

Never again, unless they come out with a lighter, more off road oriented version.
