Hey all, planning on doing the scuba mod. rear diff. / locker breather plug at the gas cap. Can someone confirm if removing this panel at the rear driver wheel well below the gas door gives me access to the area just below the gas cap? And if there is a specific trim tool for these fasteners that’ll allow me to pull them out with breaking them. Thanks in advance.

Check out the forum post about “Scuba Mods”, I would avoid trying to remove this panel as I don’t recognize these fasteners as removable without possible damage. Slide under your T4R to establish your preferred route before you start.

I'm sure you've heard of the ARB version that extends the breather to the engine bay...I, however, opted for the DIY method locating the breather in the open space behind the DS tail light. Others use the jack storage area. The latter two don't require any removal of wheel well splash panels.

I jammed the breather hose up the gas filler neck as far as it would go and zip tied it. I left a 6" loop in the hose, just above the breather, to allow for suspension droop.

Thanks. I’ll leave the wheel well panel alone. Hopefully removing the rubber liner around the gas cap will allow me to daylight and feed the breather line through. I’ll zip tie as high as possible and undersize the hole through the liner to keep the breather plug snug.

I removed that panel to run the diff breather up there. I actually didn't fully remove it - I left one place attached because you don't need to take it all out.

Those clips have some prongs you have to compress then they pull through the hole. Super fiddly. I used some small pliers and drive the 4Runner up on blocks so I could sit up while I fiddled.

They all went back in fine, but even if you broke one it would be cheap at the Toyota dealer.

Do you think trim tools like this would’ve helped? Don’t mind paying a little for some specialized tools if it’ll make the job easier.

To be honest, I’m not sure. It has been 9 months, and what I remember the most was just the challenge of getting my hands in a constricted space. There were only one or two that were hard to get at.

I broke those stupid plastic things as I couldn’t get them out without breaking. But yes that is how you access the gas filler area.

Ok, I’ll leave well enough alone and not mess w/ that panel and just feed the line down with the gas cap liner off. Hopefully there’ll be something to zip tie to at the top.

if you can get the first type of clip in this picture for replacements, I woild just drill through them to save myself the trouble. When I installed my Scarab washer bottle relocation. I needed to remove the same clips in the front, with they just poking on the engine side I still had to struggle a bit. just my 2cents. These pliers would've come handy as well

Aware of a good write up on the tail light option?

Thanks for that. You did a lot more than I, I just did the differential breather, not the locker also.

@Scarif_1 - this is my original thread, posted 4 years ago when I undertook this project and was looking for ideas, and went with the one to put it behind the DS tail light:
