I'm in the market for a TRD Off-Road. I went and drove one today and I liked it. The dealer didn't have a color I'm interested in so I inquired about ordering. They indicated that you can't custom order. That didn't seem right. I've seen posts on this forum about owners placing an order and waiting 3-4 months. I know they want to try and sell what they have but when I was clear that I don't want what they have they seemed to have no interest in helping me order what I want. Can anyone provide some insight what they did to order their 4Runner?

Also, when ordering what can you expect as far as deals? I've seen guys saying that they go theirs for $3k under MSRP but I suspect that was for a rig on the lot. Has anyone had any luck getting ordering a rig and getting it for under the MSRP?

None of the dealers I talked too were allowing custom ordering on a 4runner. Same thing, said Toyota wasn't doing it. And that was almost 2 years ago. You can get in line at an msrp dealership and guarantee that. I have heard of a few people getting under msrp lately but not a lot. Try a small town dealership if you can find one (they either suck or are great). Basically, these dealerships look at what they get allocated and might call you when they see what you want. Be patient

The term "Custom Order/Customer Order" is a common misnomer. The customer (you) don't get to actually tell the factory "I want this color and these options and these accessories", then they build it and ship it to you (Well, a dealership near you).

What actually happens is: The factory builds the exact one that you want, but it gets shipped out at random. Your local dealer (and or you) performs a nationwide search for the color/specs that you want and the dealership buys it from another dealership and has it shipped to them.

People seem to think it's like ordering a Tesla, where you go online and pick exactly what you want and nothing that you don't. It ain't that way. You have to work to FIND it. It's out there, but you gotta go search for it.

As for deals, yes, they are out there. But not for the popular colors like Lunar Rock or the Pro trim level. I got my 40th Anniversary edition for almost $5k off. My dealership was motivate to sell and didn't have any b.s. market adjustment on it.

Toyota doesn't let you custom order anything. You can put a preference request in with your dealer and if an allocation matches close to your preference, that's what you'll get. Sometimes there will be an additional option or two that you may not want. There are also regional limitations on what you can and can't get. FIO (factory-installed-options) can't be added or removed from any allocation but PIO (port-installed-options) can be added or removed at any time until port processing. And yes, you can put in a preference and get a 4Runner at invoice at a few dealers.

What color, trim, and options are you looking for?

2024 TRD Off-Road (not premium), Classic Silver, KDSS, Premium audio upgrade, NO sunroof. I have some other things on my build sheet but they can be added after it lands.

There are quite a few premiums around but I don't want the hot sticky seats that are in those. I guess I'll just wait until something comes along...

I kept looking every other day on the Toyota webpage until I found one in transit that was exactly what I wanted. When it appeared on the Toyota website I went to my dealer and made a deal on it and gave them a deposit. I had to wait about a month for it to arrive, it was still in Japan when I bought it per the salesman.

One-at-this-price stripper. Bought new 34 yrs ago, a $13K leftover. Added Detroit TruTrac, 1”rear spring spacer and “pinstripes”… Factory AC kit and roof rack bought at dealer cost at time of purchase, still blows ice cold 32yrs later. 2022 AG ORP all stock.
    Missing the KDSS.

It's going to be tough to get exactly what you want. Most likely you will have to decide on your 'must have's' and your 'wants' and figure out some acceptable configurations. For example, if you find a Premium that is equipped as you like, maybe buy it and get some seat covers if seat material is the only reason you don't want a Premium. Also, decide how far you are willing to travel to get what you want. There ARE dealers out there that advertise below MSRP.

    Must have's:
    Color
    Cloth (Off-Road)
KDSS w/ Premium Audio (package specific)
    No Sunroof

The rest of my wishes are accessories which can be added at the port, dealer or in my garage.

I've seen a list of SoCal dealers that sell at MSRP, but I haven't seen a list of dealers that sell below MSRP. Do that exist somewhere?

Does it have to be a 2024 or would you accept a 2023? I ask because when I did a search, there aren't many 2024's out yet.

2023 would be fine, it's no different. The problem seems to be that Toyota doesn't build very many TRD Off-Road with KDSS. I'm being told by dealers that what I want doesn't exist even though the website will let you configure it that way. They build more Premiums with KDSS. As someone that wears shorts year round I don't want the Soft-touch (vinyl like) seats.

The dealers are correct. You can build it that way, however, it doesn't exist...yet.

I have checked three different car buying websites (Searching nationwide) for the exact specs you want; and I found 0 matches. Most of the TRD OffRoad's have Leather and/or a Sunroof.

It's hard to find KDSS without one of those options. Do you really wheel that hard, that you'll need KDSS? If you don't, strike it from your must have's list.

The SoftTex isn't bad. I have it, and I had it in my Tacoma. I use to think "Black leather will burn my legs!", but truth is, any color leather that gets hot enough will be felt by bare skin. I live in Texas. The temps get to be 110 degrees. It was never an issue for me when I would wear cargo shorts in the summer time. Just keep the windows tinted. You'll be fine.

That's you big problem there. You want all the premium features but want base model seats, that just doesn't happen. Get seat covers and you will find the perfect KDSS TRD OR real quick.

    I personally love SoftTex.

It will see quite a lot of off road use so KDSS is a big plus. I might be able to put up with the Soft-tex but it seems like most everything shipped to SoCal has a sun roof which I really don't want.

As for the Soft-tex, it's not that they get hot, I'm hot blooded and will sweat like a pig on them because they don't breath.

I think my last 10 vehicles have had Sunroofs/Moonroofs, and I have never had an issue with them. When I hear people talk about water leaks or wind noise, I get confused. I have never had any issues with any of the cars I have owned.

When it's hot, I don't open the damn thing. When it's really hot, I make sure the slider shade is closed too, to block out ALL sunlight. Every 3 - 6 months, I make sure the gasket/seal isn't drying out. If you do that, you'll be fine.

This one has KDSS, BUT...has Sunroof & Leather. I think they bundle that together. Like, you can't get a sunroof without leather and vice-versa?

I'm not worried about leaks, car manufactures seem to have that figured out these days. Although for a rig that I intend on keeping for a long time I would be concerned as it gets older. However, it does have a significant impact on head room. That's the main reason. Plus it's annoying having to pay for something that I really don't want.

Toyota has a KDSS + MTM package w/o the moonroof that I'm hoping to find. But as I'm finding out just because Toyota has it listed doesn't mean they are building them with it.

I feel ya. I don't want to pay for something that I don't really want either. You'll just have to wait and keep searching. Eventually, the exact one you want will pop up.

I'm willing to wait. I've provided dealers two build options, one for a TRD Off-Road and another for a TRD Off-Road Premium and I'm being told by dealers that there are zero matches in the US for both options nor are any in allocation (on the dock or scheduled to be built). I don't understand why Toyota show's options that they aren't willing to supply???

Thanks, that could work out. Now the waiting game until Toyota finally decides to build something close to what I want.

It's a miracle! Toyota built my unicorn (TRD Off-Road, KDSS, no moon roof)! For whatever reason Toyota built one. Yes, only one! I have no idea why they would only build one but they did. It was destined for a dealer in the north east but my local dealer was able to swing a trade. It leaves the dock on Dec. 10th so I should have it in the middle of January. Looking forward the fun beginning (starting with new shoes!)...

PS: This sight has been very helpful already, thank you to those that have answered some of my rookie questions. I'm also figuring out how to do a better job with searches so people don't need to answer the same questions over and over.

I really lucked out with mine. I got my ‘23 ORP in the Magnetic Grey with KDSS and the moonroof which I like, for about $4600 under MSRP first offer from the dealer.
