My '02 has 163K miles and I guess it's time to have this job done. My mechanic gave me an estimate about 1 1/2 yrs ago of $800. Now he is not there, a new owner, and this shop gave me an estimate of $1300. today. What might be a fair price for this job? I'm selling it (bought a 2016) and this timing belt thing seems to be a big issue. I could reduce the price by the amount of this job or just go on and pay to have it done. It's listed on AUTOTRADER.

Are you asking for opinions or are you saying your 4Runner is for sale?

$800 was a good price for just the Timing Belt and a great price if it included the water pump and tensioner and bearings and thermostat.

$1300 is high even if it included everything else.

You may as well have them replace the water pump. It's right there and less than 5 minute job when doing the timing belt. Buyers like to know that was replaced too.

That belt definitely needs replacing. Good news if it does snap, the engine is a non-interference engine and no damage should occur.

So it’s never been done before? And I was worried bout mine being five years old. Good to know.
I had my belts/water pump done the last time so I can keep an eye on the exposed belts for wear and deterioration..

Good luck adding the cost of the timing belt to your vehicle sale. Unless its priced low it will now be priced high and people like to buy used vehicles that are maintained.

Probably can still sell it without changing the timing belt but people will try to low ball you and will take longer to sell.

Do the timing belt, belts, and water pump all together. Entire kit including Belt / water pump / gaskets, tensioner, and everything else runs about $250 for OEM. Materials (antifreeze, belts, etc) $100. Labor @$90/hr. - $450. so total job between $800-1000.

shop the job around...and crunch the numbers...it will be money well spent...if you do the needed upgrades, etc..it'll run forever..probably out living the frame..especially in an zone that uses plenty of road salt, etc...
