Hi 4Runner fanatics, I would appreciate everyones input on whether or not I should purchase this 2000 Toyota 4Runner sr5 with 165k miles for $12,000.

I had been looking around for some time now until I came across this 4runner at a dealership in Maryland. Its a trade in from the previous owner and everything about is pleasing to the naked eye and the best part is there is very minimal rust on the bottom as seen in the photos. The previous owner threw on some wild peaks with a 2inch lift as far as I know. I took it for a test drive and there isn't any shake in the steering wheel but my main concern is the gas pedal. It seems like the throttle cables might need to be replaced or tightened because they are weak and flimsy and the gas pedal is a bit stiff when accelerating. I also noticed that two of the body mounts were welded on and seem to be corroded. Its also missing a few things inside like the carpet mats and cargo cover which I pointed out to the salesmen and the last downside of this 4runner is the sunroof doesn't seem to work, it just clicks. Of course, it being an as-is car, they said they wouldn't do much to it.

Now given the fact that there are only 165k miles on this 4runner, many of my friends are telling me that the price is too high to purchase based on all the issues I pointed out. The manager won't go below the asking price and I'm stuck on deciding if its worth it.

So please share all of your input and feel free to ask questions, I will answer them to the best of my knowledge and understanding.

My daughter has a 2000 model with 312K miles on it and has never had a problem with it. I do think 12K is a bit much. Best of luck to you.

body rust is the key to stay away from any vehicle
also price is too high , its 3rd Gen not even 4th Gen -
stay away from this , or the best price is for this could be $4K or check KBB Car Value website

I love the lines of the 3rd gen…

For 12k, I would keep shopping around.

With the issues you point out, I would say no but if you do, make sure you take it to an independent shop and have it inspected.

The mileage is below average and it appears that some maintenance has been done, but I would pass. If they aren't willing to haggle it means they over valued the trade, or are trying to gouge you. Remember, as the person handing over hard earned cash, you are in control, not them. Keep looking, you'll find one. Private party is your best bet.

The major killer of these truck is frame rust, especially the rear trailing arm mount point. Along with that, all the other missing or inoperable items would make it a no-go for me. I always factor in fixing or replacing those items into my budget, and that dollar figure immediately gets removed from the asking price. Keep in mind the deferred maintenance items that they are not aware of which you will be on the hook for either right away or soon down the line. It's basically due for a timing belt based on the mileage written on the sticker, and that means water pump, radiator(if condition is unknown), idlers, tensioner, and possibly many other things.
