I decided to take it easy on the way to the in-laws for Cbristmas to see what kind of mileage I would get. Speed limit was 70 most the way with a short section of 80. I tried 65 mph for the first 20 or so miles. The transmission was still gear hunting and mileage was still only 15/16 mpg. Dropped it to 60 for the remainder on the trip, which was about 250 miles. Ended up the trip with just under 18 mpg. Looks like 60 is the sweet spot without basically crawling to get where I want to go.

I have an old lx470 and 60-65 is also the sweet spot.

60 to 65 is the sweer spot indeed for this engine which is basically behind all the big trucks and not moving at all. I have to drive 1500 miles tomorrow and decided to take the taco instead since the gas on my heavy 4R is simple awful.

I do think keeping the v6 and going to a 6speed could have made a dramatic difference on the highway for the 4Runner, while keeping the historical reliability and simplicity. Oh well…

I would've preferred the stick shift too

Taking the state highways and back roads, and minimizing interstate time is also a sweet spot. No big trucks and it makes 60 mph feel much better. I’ll get there when I get there…

60-65 seems to be the place to be especially on secondary roads.

Best way to get somewhat accurate consumption is record fuel amount abd miles driven at gas station fill ups. The pumps do not always auto shut off the same, but close enough for these MPG estimates.
